2002 4.6is value

What do you all think a 2002 4.6is value is? Car has 88K miles in good shape and the person seems to think it has a value of 21K using KBB. Also he is using KBB retail value and not private party as well.

I know KBB is on the high side. Also value is based on excellent condition where I think most people are a bit too attached to their vehicles. As per KBB less than 5% of cars meet this.

What would you think the car is worth if in very good shape? KBB has it at $15,885 for private sale so I am thinking about 14K. Am I way off and this would be a very low ball price? Am thinking to just wait the guy out and go look at the car in two weeks as I highly doubt he will get anything close to 21K?

What do you all think?

What color. I found 3 with between 90k and 100k for a little over 18k. If it is estoril expect to pay more.

I plugged in 88K miles for 2002, 4.6, base options, zipcode 20902 and got $18,285 for good and $19,285 for excellent for Private Party numbers.

$14K seems lowball. Also, 88K is not high mileage for a 2002. If there's not a lot of interest then you can wait him out some more like you said.

Black. Edmunds has it at $14,500 and KBB has it at $18,500 in good condition but KBB prices are very high.

If it needs a little work I'd say $16k to 16,500... if it is pretty clean with no current work needed I'd say about $18k seems right. If it is immaculate and looks like a brand new car that was garage kept and babied all it's life then I'd say easily worth $20k +.

Edmunds number sounds closer to Black Book/Auction numbers.

Back in sept I paid 14,500 for a 03 4.6 that was in great, but not perfect shape with 99k miles. The previous owner traded it in to a BMW for $14,000. It was still considered by many to be a steal. I've put about 3-4k into since then.

I'd still say that for what you are looking at 16-18k is fair for both parties. 4.8's still seem to get mid 20s.

Here are the most recent auction results for an '02

Date Auction Price Mileage Condition Color
12/07/10 STATESVL $15,600 66,851 Above Silver
12/08/10 CADE $15,800 89,810 Above BLACK

That price was very good, $500 over trade in?!? I got the same kind of deal about 3 years ago on my 03 4.5is for $16,000 when it was worth almost twice.

What did you spend 3-4k on. I have big fears buying a BMW with 75k+ miles that is not a steal. The thought of spending a few thousand dollars while paying off the car makes my practical sude say no to the purchase.

there are only so many 4.6is out there too, so if that is what you want, you will not have the same bargaining power as on a 4.4i for example. I ended up going all the way across the country to get one in the color I wanted - Estoril. Former CPO car with full maint history and several common failures addressed. 94K miles when I bought it and paid $18K. That was 1.5 years ago. I don't think values have really gone down since then other than factored for miles and condition. It's a great vehicle, and considering mine stickered for $75K, it's a hell of a buy for under $20K with plenty of life left. Will it be as trouble free as a new one? no, but you are spending a fraction of the original cost to drive one killer vehicle. Worth it, IMHO. Especially if you are good with DIY maint and repair.
