I'm also guessing it's the valve cover gasket.... Try to take a flash light and look around the engine, if you see oil in different places its very possible its the valve cover gasket. Mine had the same problem about a month ago.

not trying to confuse things. i have the 3.0 and changed the valve cover gasket myself and still had that same leak. took it to my indy and was told it was my oil filter housing gasket was shot, which was causing the leaking. was told can be very common on Xs. just another option for you to explore.

My main seal was leaking, and look like what the OP showed. Im not sure if it was too much oil or just 93K miles... either way, The trany had to come out to replace the seal.

turning the steering with the engine off will cause the power steering reservoir to overflow .

I took a while to figure out what was happening on my 740 when I knew I did not have a leak and yet all this fluid leaked whilst changing brake calipers .

too funny, mine looks just like that too!!!! this is the drip i get from parked...i had my osv replaced 1.5 weeks ago, thats when he noticed my rear valve covers dripping a bit...
going in friday to replace valve cover gaskets....not sure if i got a good quote or not...4.5 hours of labour?

about right, my indy (specializing German/BMW shop) told me around $700-800 US. The hardest thing is to lign up the half-moon on the driver side the passenger side is not too bad. I'll ask them to replace the OSV(in the back of manifold) and two hoses going to funnel thing as well.

mine is 02' 4.4 and i found a leak at exact same place. first i thought it was the transmission seal so we drop the transmission and found it was actually coolant leak from cylinder block rear cover. i also found another small leak from cooling system accumulator. i will post some pictures when i get home tonight.

Just wondering, is anybody really surprised by these leaks....lol!!!
