How hard is it to replace the CV boot?
i have a 2004 4.4 sport and the passenger side CV boot is torn apart, prolly from weather.. i want to replace the cv boot, on both sides, might as well, and im wondering how hard it is, i have access to a full shop with hoists and essential tools.

Do a search and you'll find everything you need to know about changing the CV boot. Good Luck!

depends - my axle was on there pretty good - took some major force to break it loose. Don't be afraid to use some serious force for that part of the job. Other than that it's not too difficult IMHO.

Why fix just the boot when you can replace the entire axle assembly for a little more cost? Changing just the boot is a bad idea IMHO.

In my case I ended up stripping the spindle nut due to a mental error  So I had to replace the whole axle. I found a remanufactured axle by A-1 Cardone at RockAutoparts.com for $75. At least that one uses an OEM axle, then clean it, check it, repack and rethread the spindle and put on new boots. That one is a pretty good way to go. If / when my other side goes I may just replace with one of those, but then again if the CV joint looks good I may also just pack it with new grease and slip on the boot that I already have sitting in my shop. I'm not worried about the axle lasting the life of the vehicle. |
