Today, I tore apart the driver's side mirror to see what was the cause of failure. (Attached picture of instructions on taking the painted mirror cover pieces off.)

About the motor housing with the broken pin, plans are to:
Use a dremel to shear off the unbroken pin.
Purchase two ~6mm long / ~2.5mm diameter steel dowel pins (need to grab calipers from work and take exact measurements)
Drill two holes through the motor housing where the sheared off pins used to be.
Drop steel dowel pins into motor housing pedestal
Align motor housing with new holes into the pedestal/steel pins
Should be a stronger permanent fix.

Anyhow as you can see in my case the microswitch contact rocker had come off, and both mirrors work properly (for now). I still need to dowel pin the housing and then go to the passenger side mirror, crack that open, and see what needs to be done.

The svisswax wheel brush came in handy for cleaning the guts of the mirror.

Thanks for this...What symptoms were you experiencing?

J.Belknap 04-11-2011 12:38 PM

When I pressed the mirror fold button, both would retract and go back out. All other mirror functions worked, though.

I'm off to find steel pins today.

my passenger side mirror is acting funny aswell it would move slow and would open after i push the button 10seconds later =/ i think my motor is dying

romeokc10 04-11-2011 02:16 PM

Do you really need them, I'm glad I don't have them on my 4.6is, just one more thing to break on these fragile beasts. Hey J. I was doing a search a while back and found your thread on the Bullrun TV show forum, did you ever try to enter, I have a VR-4 also..LOL!!

J.Belknap 04-11-2011 11:21 PM

romeokc10,

Cheers to another VR-4 owner. :)

The wife unit and I are close friends with Brooke (IS250 - Season 2) and Emily (SC300 - Season 3). Wife and Em were supposed to go on season 1, but being the procrastinator that she is, she didn't get her video interview done on time, so the producers paired Brooke and Em up. Then, things changed and Brooke and Em got slated back to season 2, then they got split to seasons 2 and 3 (as you saw on TV).

It wouldn't be far-fetched to say that you could see the wife and I and the 4.6 on the show in the future... but she's apprehensive now about doing it, having heard some of the crap that has happened during filming, which is not my place to discuss.

Anywho, I think the truck would be a ringer. (Thoughts of gravity-fed auxiliary fuel tanks have gone through my head many times.) But, if the wife isn't on board, I'm not going to press the issue. Still, thanks for reminding me to nag her again about a possible opportunity..... :)

Did the motor come with the gears? My motor is still good, but the gear on the motor is worn. Any ideas where i can pickup the gear?

Thanks!!!

J.Belknap 04-26-2011 12:02 PM

First, still need to determine exact P/N of the motor (see above), this can be done by taking physical measurements of the motor. I need to take mine back apart to do this, but if you have your mirror apart... I'm all ears. :)

About the gear being worn, I'm not sure if the motor comes with a gear or not. This requires an email to the mfr, or to a distributor, for more information.
