When my battery died in my 2002 X5 I explained to my dealer how I had been using the BMW advanced battery maintainer. The dealer then replaced the battery at no charge.

Good news I just saved $185.00 by using AutoZone.
I debated over getting the Douglas OEM brand that was 89.99 at the end my frugality one over and I got the Durolast 49-DL.

I hope I made the right choice the battery works like a charm. I installed it like 20 mins. the thing was that I had to modify the vent hose but that described in the package that comes with battery. look at the crappy pic below of the install my first LOL!

Congrats BMWJO!

FYI if you don't have an Autozone in your area look for Advance Auto Parts. They have the AutoCraft Titanum 84-month batteries for $64.99 (+$10.00 core charge). They stock the 94R and 49-1 batteries for X5's. The 49-1 is 850CCA at 0*, 1000 at 32* and comes with the vent tube adapter. Free replacement for 36 months and prorated after that.

$260 and a trip to the dealer vs. $70 and a 5 minute swap at home.

Update

This is just an update, I have no problems with the battery since I replaced it.

Be careful with that battery. keep an eye on it for the next couple months. When I purchased my X5 used, the car was in the middle of having its battery replaced (didnt run) and the PO bought a new aftermarket battery. After a couple months, I noticed hard starting, so I checked the battery and it turns out, acid had been flowing out of the battery and it was getting really hot. Luckily, I cleaned up the acid ok with no damage, but when I ran the battery number (I forgot which brand it was), it was correct for the X5. It seems the X was putting out too much charge for this battery to hold. I went to the dealer and bought the proper battery which cost me $130. I nstalled it myself and now, two years later, have no problems with starting.

what is hard starting? how can I find out if my X is putting out too much charge for the battery?
