Exhaust Pipe Tips for X5 Gas Installed on 3.0D Diesel without the BLACK SMOKE...

Just wanted to share my DIY mod for my 2003 3.0D Diesel X. I love the way the 2 oval shaped muffler tips come out on the rear for Gasoline Type X5's. I always envy their rear ends! SO I decided to GET THAT LOOK for my 3.0 Diesel X.

I didn't want to change the original exhaust system of the 3.0D because 1, I didn't want to mess up the current performance and power of the 3.0D since I'm very much contented with it. 2nd, the original exhaust end pipes are pointing downwards (were they should really be pointing when you have a diesel vehicle). I don't want spitting out black smoke directly on the faces of cars behind me!

Bought Exhaust Pipe Tips for the X5 Gas (4.4 or 4.6 or 4.8? I'm not sure sorry) and installed them on my 3.0D Diesel this way...

I'm sure the purists won't agree with what I've done and I respect that. I'm just so darn in love with those 2 shiny chrome tips protruding out that I had to really do it and get that look on my D! ;) Hope you get something out of this! Cheers!

Looks great I did mine a couple of years ago with the standard mufflers, did you remove the material & bore a hole in the mesh screen inside the muffler, couldn't tell by pics. Mine face straight out I do get some soot out the back but only when I give some stick and then only for a short time. Time for a remap now!

Thanks! No, the tips are not connected at all to the muffler. Original mufflers are untouched. The tips are NON-FUNCTIONAL. Just for aesthetic purposes hahaha (sorry). The 2 end tailpipes still point downward. These are only DUMMY TIPS ;)

The diesels go so much better with the mufflers modified once the severe restriction is removed it allows the turbo to get the gasses out with far less back pressure.

Fullmetaljacket,
Nicely done ,Like the way you welded a bracket to the a fixing bolt and secure the tips with bolts, and in no way interfering with the standard mufflers, meaning you can just unscrew the tips and bring back to stock again You got the look without the soot.:)

Huntertech,
I saw your post with the inside alteration to the standard mufflers and that was a job very well done, and now you have less back pressure (great for the turbo+performance) and a nicer sound :)

Hi,

You car looks great! I've just done exactly the same today!! I bought 2 oval stailess steal tips and had someone weld them onto my rear silencers. I then painted inside them with heat resistant paint.
I felt the same as you, i didnt want to mess around with the original system and wanted the 4.8 look!
I will get some pics up for you to see if you dont mind, dont want to steal your thead though!

Cheers,
Roy.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but thought you might like to see my tips too. The pics dont do them any justice, they look crooked but their not.
Cheers, Roy.

fullmetaljacket,

Good job. Now it is time for you to join your local bmw club...

@huntertec - thanks for the tips. I'll consider this someday.

@powers1 - yup, "look without the soot"! I like that! Thanks!

@roy2593 - no problem at all roy. its all good. nice job on your X as well. i appreciate the pictures. don't you just love those 2 chrome tips protruding out unlike our diesels - plain looking rear end :)

@blueagle - thanks. I tried to join and register like you've suggested previously (power seats thread) but the site never 'auto-replied' back to me and I was never approved. Discrimination? hahaha! tampo na ako ;) I'm referring to bimmerclub.ph.

I'm already a member of BMW Car Club of the Philippines - Powered by vBulletin

Ever since I got my X, I've always been in this forum. I felt that I learned a lot more from here versus our local sites. No offence if you're a mod or admin there. I also travel frequently to the US hence most of my issues are related to US related solutions and specs e.g. my issues on shipping the power seats I got from Fountain Valley CA to the Philippines. Thanks again!

The pipes look great . I was just wondering how huntertec managed to line the pipes up with the internal pipe in the back box . Or is there no internal pipe and the back box just packed with sound deadening material .
