This engine had a long life. Personally I would rebuild the engine and keep it for a little longer. It is a little fishy that the engine blew the day after the alternator was changed. Were you with the mechanic while they changed the alternator? Can you trust this mechanic?

I think your quote holds some water but I would like to add a little more, "Never own a BMW out of warranty unless you have a good mechanic!!"

Once at the indy shop I watched them diagnose. When doing compression check antifreeze shot 10 feet in the air during crank out of a couple cylinders. So engine is dead.
Get this. The shop replaced the alternator the day before but swears it's not related. (3.0 non water cooled alternator). They offered half price labor on a engine swap if i want ($50 an hr 20 hrs). So 1000 in labor plus 3000 for the engine with a 1 yr warranty.

Looking to sell instead.

3.0 with sport package. Body in great shape. 180k miles.

any advice and offers. In Baltimore, MD area.

It is a 2001

Might only need a head gasket . What exactly did they say was wrong with it.

They are a well known BMW indy shop in the area. Since two or three cylinders were full of antifreeze it is deduced that the block is ruined. A head gasket only would have been a little more minor. Also would spend a grand doing the gasket to find out it's the block.

I guess I could do some "make best offers" on some of the warranty engines on ebay. If I could get one sub 2000 bucks with 1000 labor, say 2500-3000 ain't all that bad. The realistic quite is 2900 for engine, 1000 for labor.
