oil seperator on '06 4.4i
 

I am a bit confused and not clear but where is the oil separator on a 2006 4.4i?

All i see are the 2 hoses from the intake to the heads on the right and left side.
and the pressure regulating valves on each head.

Also noted that the passenger side valve (rubber seal) is slightly cracked. Ordering one today from Bavauto. There was some hard oily goo that I cleaned out with a rag.

I read tons about oil separator but cant locate one on my N62 engine.

never mind, figured it out... different engine so unlike the old one doesnt have the dreaded osv issue in the back. I will be replacing both the regulator valves though this weekend.

i also have a 06 4.4.i live in northern alberta and have had the x5 for 2 winters.i checked the valves every month and there has been some build up but never enough to freeze it solid.its the wifes car and she does alot of short drives 10-15 min tops.i dont even worry about it anymore...

Yeap, feels good to own the 06 than the older one with the ccv plague

I also live in northern Alberta and have had some major issues with ccv during winter months. It's constantly being clogged and I had to get the new valve cover and ccv relocation package on passenger side ccv, this helped the situation due to insulated hoses etc but still did not fix the issue. I check it every few weeks
And clean it out. As well as never idling for to long and if I take many short trips I always take it for one long highway drive, seems to clear it out. A friend that lives up north as well only drove max 5 km to work for 5 years, only put 45,000km on his x 4.4 and his engine ended up spewing oil and he needed a new engine. BMW paid for half of the repair as he was just out of warranty. That Is probably the worst case of cold weather x5 I have seen yet, needless to say did not buy another this year.

Did you guys have any other cold weather trouble.I had a couple trans fail safe and air susp.warnings but they
went away after a couple minutes.

I received the engine fail safe program message about 4 times. It was below -40 and the vehicle had been sitting in my unheated garage. Another time it was outside at work for 12+ hours in below -40. Every time it has gone away after 3-5 minutes. Twice it was associated with check engine light flashing. the excessive vacuum I had in the engine before I had the ccv cleaned and replaced with updated cold weather one by indepednat BMW shop seemed to take care of the frequency of misfires and error messages. As well as the excessive vacuum caused by oil gunk build up.

Overall when it's above 0 this vehicle has even working fine for me but below 0 you can hear a belt squeak, no belt issues and new belts. The suspension creaks like crazy, idle is rough and transmission shifts even harder than normal when it's not warmed up. BMW dealer has been notified of every issue and the dreaded could not replicate issue was the answer to most.

So my fix will be heating my garage this winter as well as regular highway drives when driven short distances for a few days and periodic ccv clean out's. High maintenance...but oh well
