4.8is x-drive,transmission, & differential fluid

I'm looking to change the trans and x-drive fluid on my 05 4.8is

I know the x-drive fluid is through the dealer, but how much do I need to get? also, what is the pn?

Also, is the trans fluid only available at the dealer? Should I do a simple fluid swap, or change the filter and do a complete fluid flush (car has 42k miles and has been lurching for over a year now).

Thanks in advance!

The x-drive fluid is through the dealer, or through various web retailers of BMW parts. I believe ECS has it.

For trans fluid, I would only use a fluid that actually meets the LT71141 spec, not a fluid that is advertised as being just as good as fluids that do, or 'suitable for', but which doesn't meet the spec. If you don't want to go to the dealer, VW dealers have it, as well as Esso/Exxon.

Unless you are draining the torque converter and back-flushing the heat exchanger, you are just doing a simple fluid swap. I wouldn't flush it, but I would change all the fluid that came out by removing the pan. I would absolutely change the filter at the same time, and only use an OE filter.

The above may not make any difference in your lurch, but if not you will at least have discounted the fluid as the cause of the lurch.

Thanks for the info..... I'm also thinking about doing the diffs while I'm at it. What type and how much for the 4.8is?

Also, how much of LT71141 do I need?

and is this the right pn for trans oil filter: 24117543550?

You have the 6HP26 transmission which requires a different fluid (Shell M1375.4) to the 5HP24 (Esso/Mobil LT71141).

Shell ATF M1375.4 is also branded as :

ZF Lifeguardfluid6
Aston Martin - Part No. 4G4319A509/AA/S
Audi / VW - Part No. G 055005 A1 / A2 / A6
Bentley - Part No. PY112995PA
BMW - Part No. 8322 0142516
Hyundai - Part No. 040000C90SG
Jaguar - Part No. Jaguar Fluid 8432
Land Rover - Part No. TYK500050
Maserati - Part No. 231603

so any of the above will do.

Phil: Good catch. I should have stayed with my usual recommendation to read the label on the pan, and just make sure the fluid was actually to the spec, and not a universal fluid. Thanks.

ok guys, how many bottles do I need? I found ZFLifeguard6 at Bavauto for $22.95 and m1375.4 for $23.95... Do I need anything else, besides the filter for the trans?

ok, so I've spent hours searching and all the info is pretty spread out. For a 2005 X5 4.8is, fluids & parts follow:

Front & Rear Diff: 75w-90 gear oil (1.3 qts front, .8 qts rear)
Transmission: ZF Lifeguard6 oil (??? qts), Filter - 24 11 7 543 550
X-Drive Transfer Case: OEM X-Drive Transfer case fluid (just under 1L)

Is this correct?

My 05 has 80K and you could do like I did. Just leave it alone. I have the transmission lurch/bump and I don't plan on changing the fluid.
If you do a search you'll find that there are so many pros and cons about the subject it can make your head swim.

I have read many of those due to my tranny failing 2 times. IMO. It doesn't hurt to change if it's burnt and brown, but need to do it the proper way.

well, what is the proper way?
