Speaker Sizes of Midranges

Hey - so i've been here long enough to know to do a search and check articles etc but for some reason i'm not getting the answer I'm looking for. I am looking to finally do my speaker upgrade since the entire driver side speaker (dash, tweeter, midbasses front / rear door) are completely shot. very annoying.

So i'm going with some Focal speakers all around - will install new amp etc and finally replace the sub (this will be for sale soon!)..

So my question is what size is the midrange? I assume it's the 4" right?

Yes i thought about going with BSW, but they don't provide any specs on their speakers, and when i asked them they said "it's high performance speakers" they don't provide specs. I mean, i don't see the issue with saying they are 4ohm / 8ohm, sensitivity 90db, peak power etc etc. I just don't want to hand over $600 to a company that says "don't worry about it, they're great speakers"

Roadkill 09-25-2011 12:00 PM

mid range in doors are 6.5".

rastaFarai 09-25-2011 01:03 PM

I think those are technically midbass speakers. Mid ranges are in dash and rear door upper small speaker. I believe they are 4" just trying to confirm

rastaFarai 09-25-2011 08:53 PM

ok - figured it out. BSW actually has their product listed for midranges @ 2.5" speakers. Maybe I'll buy just the midranges from them :-)

Nik 09-26-2011 12:04 AM

Yes I agree, Focals are great speakers. Can you show us the setup after all done? want to know because not only the stock speakers with DSP are soft, also because the acuostis are horrible. so much sounds are lost on prem pckg X, that can be heard on a laptop that it ruins music. Also, you are taking out DSP? and going to remove dash to replace those? Take pictures If not too much trouble.
Thanks

rastaFarai 09-26-2011 07:27 AM

Yes going to remove dsp and dash speakers. I am wondering if the 4" focals will fit, otherwise I found some DSL 2.5" speakers that have great reviews. I have a sub sitting that I haven't installed, and 2 amps that are also sitting in my basement waiting. Figured this is a good opportunity to install.

Sure will take pics. Does anyone know a good sound installer in long island or new York area?

coloradox5 09-26-2011 02:51 PM

I have Focal 165 KF and CV1 speakers in my X. When powered well, they produce really clean mid and high range. I would highly suggest a BSW sub and a sub amp though to fill out the rest. What sub do you have?

rastaFarai 09-26-2011 03:22 PM

OK - makes sense. I'm going with an alpine 300/4 for the speakers and I have an Elemental Designs 10" Sub here and the Nine.e2 amp to push it.

I think i'll go with the BSW midranges for dash and rear door (the 2.5") since at least they are plug and play. and I'll stick with a pair of focals for front 6.5" and tweeter and rear door 6.5"

Nik 09-26-2011 05:57 PM

I think Focal IBus 20, This would be nice under the front seat. What do you think?

rastaFarai 09-26-2011 10:01 PM

That looks great but with 2 kids in the car most of the time I will rarely appreciate the ability of what I am putting in. So I can only justify just enough to be perfect for those times I am solo.

That would be a great option if I didn't have a sub already. Even for the trunk.

I just pulled the trigger on the focal 165VB for front and the 165CAI for back door.

nigwhyrito 09-26-2011 10:36 PM

RastaFarai - looking forward to the outcome of this project. I have the 11kv2 from elemental design in the custom bmw box. it was like 175 + 90 for the sub. I originally overstuffed it. (I didnt think it was possible) the bass was low but muffled. I took alot of stuffing out since the internal airspace is like 3 cu ft. Anyway It starting to hit a lil better but i noticed that currenlty the stock bmw speakers overpower it. its clean and tight SQL.. Not overly bassy. rear view mirror just barely shakes I need more spl .. I'm runnig it with the alpine Mrp-850M 400w rms@ 4ohm.. I think I may need to readjust my gains with a meter I should be getting about 42v ac on a 50hz tone.. I'm just noticing dropout or cancelation on bass test music in some frequencies. Im in the midst of adding another 11kv 2 to the left hand side. so then my amp will push out 800watts @2ohms.
they told me all the subs are backordered and they have to wait on the bmw box since its in archives and then i need them to mirror the design. But i do have the sub in on the left side already so i know it will work.
@nik thats only a 8in sub. I never really heard a 8in that produced good bass they sound like over powered 6x9 when I ran bass tests. Then again i listen to mostly crap i mean rap music.. and r&b.
Rasta- I noticed you have dsp.. is there a different in the dsp speakers meaning the mids and tweets compared to non dsp.. reason I ask BSW has a dropdown for the stage1 replacements for dsp and non dsp .. Are they completely different speakers dsp and non dsp?

rastaFarai 09-26-2011 10:42 PM

did elemental designs make you the box? Ha!! that's great - I was the one that gave them the specs and asked them to make it like 2 yrs ago, go figure mine is still sitting in my garage lol.

Did it fit perfect in teh right hand side where original sub goes, by fuse?

stock speakrs overpower it? that's concerning since i'm putting in better speakers than the stock..

was thinking of getting another 11kv2 as well actually and doing 2 subs..

nigwhyrito 09-26-2011 10:55 PM

Yep they made the box.
It fit but i think they could have made it 3 inches longer. it doesnt touch the bottom of the rear area..that would have introduced a little more airspace.

are you going to use the ED BMW box with the 2 subs in a push pull clamshell or a typical box that just sits rearward facing with 2 subs. that will definetly hit harder than the bmw box because of the airspace. More room for the boom.
I just likee the stealth factor of the box. no space lost in the rear area

rastaFarai 09-27-2011 07:56 AM

Not sure yet. Think I will install the eD box first see how it sounds. If the mids in the car overpower the sub I might change it and do 2 rear facing subs. Don't want to lose too much cargo space though, so might get creative and put it in wheel area

Nik 09-27-2011 11:27 AM

I was thinking of putting those 8" subs under each seat. + to leave the OEM sub in the trunk. I too listen to Rap & R&B sometimes. anyway I don't have alot of intension that my base has to shake me, I just want a Clean base, and A clean acoustics that doesn't loose a little effects ecpecially if I'm listening to other music. When smoked it all metters even more!

rastaFarai 09-27-2011 11:53 AM

Lol You installed new amps right? Audio place told me I would need to buy a processor as well in order to hook up my own amps and keep my factory head unit. He said the one he uses by fosgate is approx $800. Do I need one? Or did you just wire your new amps to factory amp / wiring?

mrbmwx5 09-27-2011 11:56 AM

Why not fly me to NYC.... Everthing will be done in one day.

BigBlueX 09-27-2011 12:48 PM

I put two twelves in the back. Their some old brand named Dr. Crankenstiens. lol I got them when my buddy bought his Ml320, the guy selling didn't want the subs so i gave him twenty bucks for em. I left em sitting for about two months and finally one saturday decided to install.. got an alpine amp 300 wats. Truck absolutely rattles. a couple of times i got error messages saying the ck taillight was loose. I can make other beamer alarms go off. lol

LOL yeah Tom check the mailbox in a day or 2 your ticket is on it's way :-D

Seriously though - this is the first i've heard about a processor - does anyone else have one with their modified audio? New amps etc? if so what are some good choices??

imtheneal 09-27-2011 09:08 PM

So i found that BSW uses a brand called rainbow for their speakers which are actually made for german cars. so find the rainbow w130 slx and those are the mids i believe!

rastaFarai 09-27-2011 10:02 PM

Ok good to know. I heard today from a friend that they were MB quartz

Have you tried inverting the phase of the subwoofer to mitigate the effect?

Sorry for the double post. Processors are not required to keep your factory head unit, that could be accomplished with line-level inputs to your aftermarket amps. Signal processors are basically advanced line-level converters that add features such as time correction to produce proper staging and scrubbing to flatten the frequency response curve, usually with user selectable options for EQ. They are completely optional, but are helpful when you're trying to move to a different speaker count (ex. a 2-way component set in the front as opposed to the stock 3-way) or to provide full-range to the rear speakers (but why would you do that and destroy your front staging??) Do a cost-benefit on them and ask yourself if you'll really use the advanced features. Some things like time-correction are basically impossible any other way but most other features can be improvised for significantly less, ex. A DSP delete would open up a full range source allowing you to run whatever frequency you'd like to any driver.

Nope I was waiting till i got my 2nd woofer and bmw box installed..
I had planned on doing clamshell -push pull but then I really like the box being in the side compartments since i dont have nav im a put another box in.

Nik 09-28-2011 07:39 PM

Yes, I think DSP Delete is a MUST, That kills sound doesn't it? And run all new wirings, while leaving old once untouched. Also, Can 6Channel Amp be connected to player? I mean, How many inputs does it have? Is there picture of it? Sorry, don't know much about it yet.
Oh, and don't forget to do Sound isolation while at it.

nigwhyrito 10-10-2011 07:44 PM

Hey rasta any update on this yet. Did you install your box yet? Also I want to reword my statement about the ED 11KVs what i meant to say was if you drive with windows down then bass is overpowered by road noise and other speakers. I always drive with windows down. Now if you drive with windows up then the 11KVs does put out some nice SQ bass. Put the windows down do about 50mph ya notice that nice SQ you had is pretty much gone. Thats when the other speakers are overpowering as you increase the volume, to compensate with roadnoise. I also turned off speed vol setting because that introduces distortion because its changing the settings you tuned your amp with. Your car was stopped so it was set at x vol and you adjusted the sound to that setting . you then speed up it now increasing the level and gains. Also changing it from what you originally set the curve at.

I still have not ordered the 2nd ed speaker and box combo. Its on my list of things to do. When I do get it i will post some pics.

rastaFarai 10-10-2011 10:33 PM

I haven't got it installed yet. Was waiting for my BSW midranges I purchased. Might do it this weekend. Hoping the sub won't be too overpowered. Mostly windows up driving though.

just got the car back a few days ago, did it on tuesday. it sounds amazing. bass is pure and mids and high are perfect. everything's perfect - kick drum thumps all around and clear.. love it!! the ED sub fit perfect as well but i need to cut the back panel and put a grill on so i don't muffle the sound. will take some pics when weather clears up

nigwhyrito 11-18-2011 09:55 AM

sweet cant wait to see it now im just waiting on ED to send my 2nd sub they told me around decemeber or january.. darn thats a long time. after that im getting the bsw tweets, and a specdock2.5 and maybe the midranges
