I could be wrong but I thought when you went the way of the GT1, Inpa, and dis. that you still needed the multiplexer or yellow diagnostic head.. I been doing a little research. But i could be wrong. I find a few websites that (host the inpa,gt1, and easy dis software. Hint : arrrrrrrrh matey + bay .org and possesed by a ____ +oid.me

I finally bought the Peake code reader from ECS Tuning at $139.00. It does work great. :thumbup:Thank you to those of you who actually directed an answer to my question. Not really sure where some of the others were going:dunno:

Excuse my ignorance but I don't see from the pictures how that Peake reader would work. It looks like it only has two LCD squares so does that connect to a laptop or is there a decipher book 1-99 for the BMW codes? My guess is that there would be more than 99 error codes in any given vehicle.....

The only catch w/ the Peake reader is that BMW is going away w/ the round port in their cars, my 01 X5 for example. So on top of spending $150 for the reader, you've sometimes gotta buy the round to OBDII port adapter cable....at $80 friggin bucks, for a cord! Fortunately, i made my own for around $10 after searching for homemade Peake adapter.

The Peake is a middle ground tool, sitting between a custom laptop for a few hundred dollars (which the laptop does FAR more (which can also be good and bad depending on the user) and can be cheaper than the Peake and adapter combo) and the OBDII bluetooth tool that I got off eBay for $20 paired w/ using a free app on my phone.

To each their own though.

I'm a newbie to this and looking to get a wifi reader for my iOS device, got some Q's
1) I just want a reader, not be doing any programming or resetting
Would something like this ELM327 WIFI OBD2 Wireless Car Diagnostic Reader Scanner Adapter for iPhone 5 4S | eBay suffice?
2) prefer a read only device so it wouldn't accidentally reset anything or is there a chance these things can damage my vehicle ?
3) what would be a good iOS software for this?

Used the app Torque a couple of weeks ago to diagnosis a misfire in cylinder No.4. Swap the spark plug out but I still had the miss, so I swap the coil pack from cylinder 4 to cylinder 2 and when the code came up it was for a misfire in cylinder 2. Autozone carries coil packs for our car. So for $80.00 bucks and a little work I was able to fix my BMW. I carry my OBD II bluetooth adapter in the car and have the free app Torque on my phone. Like the app so much that I brought the app for my tablet. App is available for Android and Ipad.

The app does reset error code(s), but it does not do coding, so if you want to recode your fog lights so that they will be on when the brights are on you need to get something else. I'm not into coding so this doesn't matter to me.

A side note, my car is a MY 2001 E53 3.0I. All the coil packs had the BMW logo on them and the manufacturer's date was 2008. So the P.O. had all the coil packs replaced some time after 2008 with OEM BMW coil pack. I'm surprise that the new coil pack only lasted less then 4 years and less then 50,000 miles based on the carfax report.
