another transmission question
 

so I'm picking up my daughter from school when I turn left and the car rolls to a stop, its a 01 4.4 x5 with 152k on the odometer, car is in drive motor reves up car does not move, no idiot lights/ message, any thoughts? kind of smells like gear oil too.

Check the oil level first. Make sure you top it up properly. The fluid temperature is a very important factor.

Then where did the fluid go? Did the OP say they had recently removed/changed fluid? Is fluid leaking out on under the vehicle?

If nothing has been done or any visible sings of a leak the fluid does not need to be topped. This is more than likely a transmission failure.

where does one check the fluid? nothing has been done to the trans, had a fuel pump installed a couple of months ago. Front cv axles 2 years ago.

Will the vehicle roll when you have Park selected?

yes, it does indeed move with the selector in park altho not under its own power :banghead:

It's the transfer box, axle or a driveshaft then.....

My money's on the transfer box.
