looking at a 02 3.0 and have a few??

Hi all,

I'm looking at an 02 x5 with 56000 kms(I'm a Canadian eh :) ) and had a couple of questions that you may be able to answer instead of calling the dealership up.

1. Is $33k-$35k ($28k-30k USD) for the unit a good price (interior and exterior are in exellent condition) on a private sale

2. The inservice date was Feb 02 and I know that I can transfer the orignal warranty. Is the 02 x5 warrant 4/50 (or equivalent in Canada) and can I purchase the upgrade to 6/100 MP being the third owner?

3.Is the coverage for the 6/100 MP as good as a CPO purchase from the dealership, for an equivalent model year and mileage?

The reasoning I have on this private vs a dealership sale is that in Canada we have a lovely tax called the GST. If I were to buy the car privately I would not have to pay an extra 7% tax and the CPO equivalent at the dealership is about $5k more.

dealership response on the warranty

Can anyone on this forum help? I called the dealership this morning and the business manager informed me that I cannot purchase any extended factory BMW warrranty if I purchased this vechile privately. The dealer stated that they would have to buy the car, certify it and then sell it me(sounds a little wacked :wow: )Based on this I called the seller and declined based on not being able to buy any warranty...mine as well buy a CPO vechile for a few grand more and bite the tax :(

The person selling then called the dealership and the business manager offered an extended warranty for $2600 CDN. What are the rules for purchasing extended warranties on the X5 that still have factory warranty.

The service on the sales side seems a little 'seedy' and I'm having second thoughts on becoming a bimmer owner. Seems like they want to hose the deal and make more $$$ on sale or transfer costs.

Thanks to all that read an respond.

Can't help on the warranty comparisons from down here but the numbers to me say $33,000 x 7% = the extended warranty......

Call another dealer and see if you can get an extended warranty for 'your' car that you've 'owned' second hand for a while. Whilst they see an opportunity to make a few bucks, they will also take the warranty risk for you.

Keep in mind that the $5k may be well spent if there are future reliability/mechanical problems that you would otherwise have to fix yourself........ remember.... buyer beware.

The car sounds a little pricey, especially for being a private sale and not CPO. If you can get the owner to move a little on the price, that would offset the cost of the warranty. I would strongy suggest getting the warranty, through BMW if at all possible. Just for piece of mind, this way you won't have any issues finding an approved shop - if it works on BMWs, it's cool. This warranty is definately worth it. I believe buying an extended warranty through BMW is pretty straight forward, as long as the car is still under its original warranty, you're golden. I bought a CPO 02 3.0i this past March for 32,000 USD from a dealership, a good deal I think. Good luck with the purchase!

That's an excellent price for Canada. I was at my dealer on the weekend, and they had a couple of similar mileage 02's priced in the mid $40's. That's pretty typical dealer pricing on used. They also had an 02 4.4 with 87,000km for $52K (plus 7% gst on both those).

Nothing seedy here. Most manufacturers will sell an extended warranty to the original owner right up the day the factory warranty expires. If you aren't the original owner, however, you can't buy it. That's standard industry practice in most cases (although it varies depending on whether it's a manufacturer or third party warranty). Perhaps you should do a deal with the current owner as long as he purchases the extended warranty before he sells it to you, and you can fold it into the price. Verify the warranty is transferable though. Usually the are, but some of the third party warranty services won't transfer.

warranty to the orginal owner?

What are the rules for CPO extended warranties, Is it offerred only to the orginal owner or is it available to the current owner as long as the vechile is still under the original 4\80 warranty. The odd thing is the current owner is the second owner and when he called about the warranty the business manager offerred it to him over the phone for $2600 CDN and said he could process that minute if he gave him a credit card number.

Also is there a fee for transferring CPO warranties?

BMW CPO warranties are completely transferrable, without any fee at all. You DO NOT need to be the original owner, the ONLY requirement is that the vehicle is still under the original 48mo/50000mi warranty.

I just recently purchased an '02 X5 (SP, 5sp, Nav, DSP) and had to make a similar decision.

It is still under factory warranty, the standard 4year/50k, with about 44K miles. I called the dealership and asked them the same question you did, "can I buy the 6/100" they said "No, but we will sell you our own 3rd party extended warranty, just talk to our finance guy...' A

I decided to go with the private seller primarily because I did not think the premium for a CPO car (about $4K - $6K more, but usually with fewer miles) from a dealership was worth the money on this particular vehicle. I can buy a very nice 4yr/100k (from the date of purchase) extended warranty direct from either of the two most reputable 3rd party firms for about $2000 USD.

So I've got 6 months and about 6k left on the mfg warranty, then I'll likely go to 4 years/100k extended. You generally need to purchase your extended warranty before your mfg warranty has expired for the best pricing.

just search for "extended warranty" and you'll find a number of threads on that topic and the general opinion that on an X5, it seems to be more recommended than not.

The saving grace on my X5 was the mfg warranty, I've had about 6 different items fixed at the local dealer that were under warranty with no hassle whatsoever.

whatever you do, have the car checked out by a reputable mechanic before you buy.....I have a story on that (thank goodness the car was under warranty, because my reputable BMW dealership didn't catch any of those 6 items when i paid to have it checked out), but I'll save that for another thread!

good luck...we really like the X5 overall, very solid and fun to drive.

David
