Michelin X-ice Xi2 for SUV?
 

I just went to tire shop and put a deposit on a set of Xi2 tires. He is selling them for $900 w/$70 mail-in rebate. I think that is a good price, but was wondering if this is an SUV tire or just passenger/minivan tire. I can't find any info about it being for our SUV.

I searched the forum for info, but it's limited. Anyone have experience with this tire? Is it an XL (load) tire?

Tire will be used for normal winter driving in Portland, Oregon. 90% rain and 10% snow/ice in lower elevations. Lots of hills around town up to 1200' elevation w/ spots of icy areas.

Tire rack should give that info, among other places - IIRC we need 108XL or above.

Thanks. I got the info from Michelin website. Specs look exactly the same as the Alpin tires, except that the speed rating is T(119) for the Xi2 vs V(149) for the Alpin, so the Alpin would have better handling. I doubt I'll be going over 70mph in the winter around here. I am thinking that the Xi2 has better snow and ice traction, and it has a 40k mile warranty.

I ran the X-ice (first version) on my Tundra for 45,000 miles and kept them on year round. Good tires for a Tundra but probably not the same quality as a Pilot Alpin.

The Xi2 are good quality premium tires and you'll have no issues running them. They really shine when it's icey out, since you get a lot of rain and it may get to the freezing point, black ice is something that you should look out for and I'm sure these tires will perform well.

Run these on my X5 and my Q7. Awesome tire including wet and dry conditions.

Good winter tire, you'll be safe and very happy as long as you get that it's not the same as a high performance tire when it's dry. Price is a little high, I got them online for about $150 each, $50 for shipping, $100 for local mount and balance, same rebate. You could do about the same on the Pirelli Scorpion. So, you're supporting your local business with the difference and getting one-stop shopping. Good luck.

Nice price. Is that for 18s? What website? I guess I forgot to put my tire size in the OP, I am running 255/55/18 for winter. I got BMW OEM rims and winter tires on a special from a local guy selling his 4.8is, so I am pretty much stuck buying 18" tires now.

Not 18s. I go to 17s for winter. Your price would be closer to online for 18s - I use the Tire Rack folks.

I am currently running the XI-2 on my 4.6IS
They are spectacular tires in ice and cold and decent in deep snow.
They are an ice radial so there is lots of siping across the contact surface of the tire giving good bite in the ice and cold. There is not a lot of wide evacuation channels on the tire so if you're in a heavy snow climate i would recommend a snow tire as opposed to an ice radial. Something like a Hankook I-Pike
