Victor Reinz from Napa or ECS or FCP isn't the same as the one from the dealer. I've made this mistake too on my E39 as well as a bunch of other e38-e39 owners They started leaking again after 15-20k and not because improper install.. Comparing same brand from dealer and other stores , you'll notice the difference right away, with thicker, more malleable rubber for the dealer one. Same applies for the intake manifold gaskets. I always buy my gaskets at the dealer..parts, a different story.. |

Just installed this 2 weeks ago.......... BMW E53 X5 M62 4.4L Engine - 11121437395KT - Ultimate Valve Cover Gasket Set - ES#2713032 |
Yup I was strictly referring to Victor Reinz, Elring Klinger, Goetze or Meistersatz...people had problems with those.

Those cheap gasket sets are only good for used car lots (Fix the leak AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE, then sell it), and shady indy shops (buy cheap parts to repair, then charge owner genuine BMW part price).

That's why I said there's a difference between VR dealer compared to VR online. Genuine Bmw part is...well..genuine;) |
I know this is an old thread, but I followed the OP's detailed instructions today and they were perfect. Thank you for the photo DIY with just the right amount of detail! This was my most challenging project to date, and I loved it.
My Indy (whom I am no longer going to) quoted me $706 for this effort. I did it for <$100 in parts, and about 3 hours of effort. |
The first time i used a Victor Reinz VC gasket and not long after (5K) had to redo it with a Genuine BMW which has been doing fine for the last 20K or so. On the other hand the NAPA thermostat ( ~$53) is made by the same company as OE even has the same P/N just missing the BMW logo - been fine for 70K!

Thank you!~
