:: ECS Tuning :: Automatic Transmission Service Video DIY
http://www.ecstuning.com/forum/bmw/ecs800header.jpg The automatic transmission on most BMWs is said to have lifetime fluid... we here at ECS as well as many transmission manufactures recommend service every 30k miles. Over the life of a vehicle, the transmission can often be overlooked when performing routine maintenance. If left unserviced, the automatic transmission fluid will break down, causing the valve body and filter to become contaminated with deposits and sludge. This will lead to poor shifting, slipping, and ultimately transmission failure. Below is a DIY video explaining the Automatic Transmission Service process LINK to video Embedded video: Protect your transmission. |
"Using the wrong fluid will cause big problems" yet you've put the wrong fluid in it!
The 5HP19 should use the same fluid (LT71141) as the 5HP24. Phil |

this will be good
|
Phil the fluid used in the video meets all the specifications for the transmission in the vehicle shown.
|
Okay, well I’m sure no-one wants to restart that discussion again :) so I would just say that specifically stating that the fluid is ‘ruby red’ in colour, when ZF’s only recommended fluid is honey coloured, might confuse those with less understanding and possibly lead to them putting Dexron in their ZF transmission. Otherwise, a highly commendable video.

Great video, I have to do change my fluid and filter this weekend.
|
Nice video and seems simple! I'm assuming the X5 would be similar if not identical?
I'm not sure why then it is recommended not to change the fluid on cars (X5) with high mileage??? I didn't see anyathing that would be specific to that in the video? I've read that even the dealer doesn't recommend it so why is that? Your insights ECS would be appreciated? Does measuring the temp tells that the trans fluid in there is the right amount? |

Yes the temp gauge instructions are identical. And you need it to know when to close the fill hole. RRPhil knows his shit. ZF takes honey colored oil. Not red. |
That's my hestiation--I don't have a temp gage and won't know when to close the fill hole.
Everything else is pretty basic. Bill |
