Anyone supercharge their v8?
I'm seriously considering bolting this onto my 04 N62B44.
ESS N62B44 545i/645Ci TVS2 Supercharger System - ESS Tuning | BMW Tuning Parts | BMW Racing, Tuning, Aftermarket, Performance Parts | Engine Power Chips | Performance Upgrades Chip I'm assuming there will be numerous issues to contend with including but not limited to; * Gearbox strength * X-Drive Clutch capabilities * Engine Mounts * Chasis Strengthening * Drive shafts in general * Air intake and filter modifications * Bonnet clearance * Front mount heat exchanger clearance and disadvantages My main consideration is the gearbox - I don't really want to put the additional 80ft pounds of torque on the gearbox to have it shit itself all over the road So anyone out there put a supercharger on their v8 that can give me any tips or anyone see any issue with doing this? Thanks in advance Andrew |
how many miles are on your truck? have you done a compression check to assure the motor can handle the boost? usually one of the biggest hurdles and cost is the tune. FI is worthless unless the truck is tuned to accept the change.
|
What about your exhaust? Have you done it yet?
|
That seems like a serious kit. It will be a lot more cost than this in the end. Especially on a BMW.
|
would that work on a 4.8is?
|
^papa, i'm curious how you got the power numbers from your motor without boost?
|
Haven't done the exhaust yet or done a compression check but was planning on doing the whole thing at one time. Never been interested in doing things piecemeal, I like to do a performance upgrade as a one off with every part matched to each other.
Air boxes / Exhausts / extractors give a performance boost but nothing like what a supercharger does so my main aim is to find out the issues with a major power boost like one would get from a supercharger |
To realize more power, in addition to breathing in more air, need to exhaust out more!

Do a twin turbo kit,
Supercharger is boring, everytime you need more boost, you got to change the pulley. With Turbo, all you need is adjust the boost controller. Even better, nothing sound sweeter than an External Gate screeming. Still, all these things cost ...to support more power you'll need to consider these things .... Intercooler ... either Water to air or Air to Air CAI Exhaust system ECU upgrade to support Bigger Injectors, Fuel Pump, Fuel Reg, Fuel Surge Tank, New Fuel Rail, Ignition system ...... Gear box syncro Drive shafts Dyno Tune ...... and because E53 runs 63% (?) power to the rear ... = TYRES :) * My fav = Twin Turbo Gallardo Twin Turbo Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Dyno - 1042RWHP - YouTube |
From the BMW's the I've seen that people try to do forced induction it never turns out well unless you are willing to deal with problems and complications. If you are willing to put down around 10k to get this done and you really want more power you may want to consider selling the X5 and getting a earlier model Cayenne twin turbo. You will get similar power output with a stock engine. Then again, the Cayenne TT is not known to be reliable either. At least it will be easier to trouble shoot since you are dealing with a stock motor and you won't get killed by the resale of a SC X5.

If you're comfortable with the knowledge of how little resale value these things add, and are willing to go the extra mile for a quality tune, GO FOR IT. That twin screw is going to do so much more than the centrifugal that I'm locked into. Your six-speed auto will handle the torque gained on a pump gas setup. Man I wish I had a twin-screw for some real grunt off the line.
A well engineered long-term turbo or twin-turbo setup is all about packaging & underhood heat management. Long-term heating, interfering plumbing, greater number of parts & points for leaks, all should be considered. In this instance, it's an overly complex and arguably more expensive way of reaching the goal. For what it's worth, I'm at 130k miles. 128k of them have been supercharged, and without a single failure where the supercharger was directly or the root cause of the fault. I blame it on system design and maintenance. If you pull the trigger on this, send me a PM regarding what engine/trans tune changes were made and how that was done. |
Thank you everyone for your input and advice. Belknap as much as I'd like to go with your advice this is the family car so what I have decided to do is to buy an old model M3 (E46) and make it a project car, then I can do what I like to it and not have to worry about the family car blowing up on the freeway.
The overall feeling I get is that I am going to create a monster therefore might keep the X5 stock. Thanks again Andrew |
Andrew, backup vehicle is always a good call. Good luck with your E46.
Here's some 6hp26 info, for what it's worth. |
