I have a 2004 as well and IIRC, they didn't have Bluetooth until the later build dates, starting around 10 I think. My supposedly doesn't have it as I'm a 06 2004 build date as well (I'm pretty sure that's it anyway), however, 2 or 3 times I've been able to connect to the Bluetooth in the car. I can't make any calls or do anything with it, but a few times a red light has come up on the dash and my phone has been able to connect. Not trying to hijack the thread, just sharing my strange experience over the last year of ownership...

When red light is on, that means nothing is paired. Which means you can try to pair. When paired, all of the 3 lights are off. When making a call, the light is green.

Update: so I am still confused at this point, it seems that I have all the components there, but it is not showing up whn I scan with my phone, is there a fuse missing or button I need to push? I do not have nav, and seems it might have been added at a later date, judging by the card date, anyone have any suggestions for me at this point?

My red light comes on maybe 1 in 10 times I start the car, should I try to pair only when that light is on?

perhaps the TCU is fried, I had a leak in my rear taillight last summer
and that was enough to cause the original unit to fail.

Lots of confusion here.

I had a 2004 for 7 years before I bought my *other* 2004 just last year. Later build 2004 E53's came with BMW Assist- and that had it's own special (read non-functional) Bluetooth module. You'll even get a little card with the MAC address and the pairing codes like the one the OP showed. Not that it'll do anything for you.

In order to get Bluetooth to function, you'll have to purchase the Bluetooth ULF (I bought mine last year from getbmwparts.com). You'll have to install it by removing the old BMW Assist/BT module on the left side of the trunk and replacing it with the shiny new one.

Now- I am pretty sure some trickery is involved here as well 'cause you have to code the car to turn *off* BMW Assist. The instructions (that I cannot find) mention a little sticker that the friendlies at the dealer are supposed to install so that the driver doesn't think BMW Assist is still active.

I am good friends with a dealer tech and he took the controls for all of that, pairing my phone using the computer rather than the (non-existent) pairing button in the console.

When I got home and installed the button in the center console, I could pair any phone I wanted any time. I believe that I *could* have followed a process without the pairing button or a dealer computer/GT1, but I did not try it.
