Idle engine vibration/ rattle in steering

Hi guys! Odd thing that's been going on for some time. I'm at a stop light an I can feel the engine vibration at idle through the steering wheel. When I accelerate or slow to a stop it's fine but, when stopped and idling it vibrates the steering wheel to massage my hand.

Is there a bushing or the like to dampen something like this?

Thanks!!

Maybe check the engine mounts? I think SlickGT1 recently replaced his so you might check one of his threads.

Here you go. Maybe check if you have oil around the mounts.

Does it vibrate all the time or infrequently? I'm asking because mine does something similar but it's infrequent and even when it does vibrate if I pull forward a little bit it goes away. Haven't tracked mine down but I think it's either the motor mounts, transmission stop buffer/rubber mount, driveshaft guibos or one of the front axles...or in typical BMW fashion it could be all of the above.

Check your engine mounts. Search for my name and engine mounts. You can test with another person. No tools needed.

Only vibrates at idle when stopped at a light. I'll check mounts and see what it is?

I bet the vibration get less with lights on, and AC on.

Ok.. Update! Turns out my driver side engine mount is toast. As soon as I put it in drive and gave it gas, my buddy saw the whole left side raise up and I heard/ felt a thud at the same time. Check it in reverse for the other side and it's fine.
I called three of our local dealers and two don't have the part in stock. It would be 3-5 days and price was $105 and $89. Called the third dealer and they have two mounts in stock with a price of $150.00 ea....Really? wtf?

So, I ordered one online to arrive early next week and I may just get one from the stealer for the $150 and change the other side when the $65 online part arrives.

Slick had it right!! You so smart!!! Lol!!

glad you got it fixed and figured out quickly big J! i was just about to post up try out with the AC on and off but Slick beat me to it!

how many miles on those original mounts?

Big "J" 09-07-2012 02:06 PM

114k on the clock.
What blew me away was the huge difference in price from one dealer in far north Dallas ($89) to the one in Ft. Worth ($150)!! I guess they know they're the only one with them in stock and can name their price?

Craig, at Bloomfield BMW. You cannot mess with this guys pricing.

And did you even check ECStuning.com. I believe both are around $80 on there.

My car didn't even have 80K when mine blew.

Word of advise though. Do both at the same time. Why you ask. I tell you.

You need to take out the pass side out, and then tilt the engine to get the driver side out. If you do one, then the other, you will be doing double work. I paid my indy for this. Cost me 150 for both. Less than 2 hours start to finish. By the book was over 2 hours per side. lol. I love the book pricing.
