Modified Driver/ Barn Tunned

I just completed this blower job on BMW e53 x5 2000.

I am solid and experienced DIY, this job took me about ten hours total.
I moved slowly and documented everything. I was very careful.

Do not even consider this job without the X5 Bentley Manual - This manual is excellent (and is required) for this job. It covered about 95% of what needed to be done.

Use extreme caution when handling airbags!!! Disconnect the Battery! I treat these as explosive devices and give airbags the care and respect they deserve. I keep hands, arms, and face away as best I can. When removed, I store airbags in clean dry safe location. I use two hands to hold them and move them.

Once the Air Bags are disconnected – Do not (never) reconnect the Battery –until the entire job is completed – For Safety and you do not want Airbags codes/faults detected when job is finished.

Read the Bentley manual the day before (every step) first before starting this job.

– You will need to jump back and forth between pages in this Bentley manual so make notes in the manual – For example what page you need flip to next – lots and lots of flipping guys!

If you do this job – plan 2 days of down time. I was about ¾ done and just got tired and had to quit. I finished up next day fresh.

Really - This is not a job to have a few beers during …

The simple items like the drivers trim panels, center console, and glove box gave me trouble (and time) on reinstall. Take notes of where screws are located and take pictures. Taking stuff about is easy, putting it back can be hard and aggravating.

Extend the steering column 100% - open all windows and hatches now. Including the sunroof . hint: hang drop lights through openings

Take your time! – Do not rush! Plan this job for a rainy weekend! Rework and backtracking is not an option here. (way to much time involved)

Your goal is 100% success on the first an only attempt.

0) Read the manual first
1) use and follow the manual - step by step – Don’t wing it or anything
2) Take detailed notes on each step
3) Take photos of tricky trim panels and screw locations
4) Label some wires – believe me, you will get confused on some.
5) Put screws and parts in labeled (Step ) bags - I had 35 Step bags when done. Each Step bag had written notes!

Reassembly is reverse - Take your time – Be careful - take breaks

7) Test everything you took apart


This Job is possible - 100% Success is possible (in my opinion) if you follow how i approached this.

BMW Nashville just quoted me $370 parts, $1377 labor. 8.5 hours. Ha

I started hearing light squealing and squeaking from the blower motor off and on now since the winter. It definitely sounds like the bearings in the blower motor are failing. But I have been able to speed up the fan and the squeaking would disappear and be gone for weeks so it is a off and on issue.

Today, I left the house to go pick up the wife from work and no blower motor, nothing. Tried turning off the A/C and turned the fan level to 0 turning off the system and then switching the fan level back up to restart everything and still nothing. Nice, and it's 80F here today.

Got to her work and shut the car down for a few minutes and restarted the car and the fan started working but squeaking again. Raised the fan level all the way up to max and the squeaking stopped again and worked fine all the way home.

So the writing on the wall is this DIY is in my near future. Does anyone know if there is a way to lubricate the bearings in the motor without pulling the dash out for a temporary fix until I can source a new blower motor?

Secondly, anyone have recommendations on best blower motor source. I would only want Genuine BMW.

Unfortunately there is no way to lubricate blower axle glide bearing without taking it apart and when you get there no point not replacing it.

I still warmly remember this project a few years back. :rolleyes: Just take a few deep breaths and start digging.

It seems like your final stage blower motor resistor is failing. Your symptoms are an exact replication of when mine failed.

The squealing is a different symptom. I’ve always been told to keep the cabin filter fresh, or it will stress the blower.

It's possible and the final stage is a million times easier to replace so one could start with that. Though in this case tackling the motor itself is inevitable in the near future.

Thanks guys. I agree the FSR is a lot easier to replace but it doesn't explain the squealing or squeaking. I don't ever have any of the FSR symtoms like pulsating or battery drain so I am fairly confident the motor is failing. Seems to be a common problem.

I found FCP Euro has this one on clearance for just under $200 so even though I don't have $20 in my BMW slush fund, my wife reminded me that summer is almost here and we needed to make a sacrifice and get this coming.

I didn’t either Boost. Just quit on me. And you won’t believe when! During hurricane Harvey! The darn thing went out when I took the X out to see if the water was rising. The rain was pouring, the windows were fogging, it was a nightmare literally.
