Problem with stereo / headunit
I need help from u guys!
My stereo in my 2001 bmw x5 want give any sound. Sometimes it can work for several weeks and suddenly it will not work, the sound goes away for some reson. The stereo is still on and i got all the functions exept for the nav and sound, is this the display that is messing or is it in the trunk? What can i do? I hate to drive without sound and would like to fix this a.s.a.p /Thank´s! |
it is probably in the trunk, but we need more info on your setup - DSP, NAV, TV?...
|
yes i have dsp,nav and tv
|
you are very laconic in your description, and the answer can only be very broad... the issue can be anything, from loose connectors, to water-damaged modules...
to narrow down the problem, you need to try several things and make a note of the results... next time you lose your sound, try to see if it correlates to a bump on a road, to high temperature, to rain, humidity... note if the nav is going blank, or frezzes or whatever... try to bypass the nav module and see if sound comes back... we are trying to help you diagnose the issue but we are remote to you and need first hand account in order to help... and as much info as possible... |
Now i have taken all apart, the cd changer, dvd / navigator and the head unit. I have checked all cables and nothing wrong. I also have done this step: 1) Insert key but do not turn on ignition
(2) Turn on headlights (don't ask but it works!) (3) Disconnect battery (4) Remove fuses no. 7 and no. 41 from holder in glovebox (5) Wait 5 minutes (6) Reconnect battery & plug fuses back in Now when i have done all this the display is all black, the orange lamp shines but the display is black! So what the F**K is this? |
this procedure.. i am not familiar with it... :(
what was it supposed to accomplish? |
It's probably the amp, do a search here on the site and you'll see that amp failure is somewhat common. Per your description of the problem everything works but you have no sound, well what makes sound... the amplifier.
|
Now i got the display working again but still no sound so it must be the amplifier. Can i fix it or must i buy a new one? What model can i put in instead of oem amp?

+1 ?
Is this one good and easy to install? BMW X5 DVD - 2 din 7 inch DVD GPS Navigation System For BMW X5 E53 - Car DVD GPS Navigation Think its better to buy a new one instead of searching for the fault on my stereo |
i think (+1) means that the person agrees with you and says the same thing, in this case, he has the same question as you did, about the aftermarket Amp...
BMWs are wired wierd, which means that regular amps will not just go there, as the modules split the sound and the control of the modules - this way half of the electronics are in the front of the car, and the other half - in the trunk... please search on this forum as there were successful aftermarket sound system installation, even though i personally prefer to keep that area OE - since the items are on the iBus of the car, the audio modules communicate with the rest of the car and the aftermarket units do not have that (unless specifically designed for BMWs) |

Do you have the DSP sound system in your car? The unit in your link is what's known as a Hualingan, do a search there's lots of info about it, I noticed in the link they offer an adapter and they say this unit will work with DSP equipped cars. I've checked with several sellers of this unit and they all say it will not work with DSP equipped cars, so do some research. As for your amp I think you can have it repaired or buy one off Ebay, I don't think buying a new head unit will help, you still need a working amp. |
