service engine soon light (diagnosis)
hey everyone.
I turned the car on and it had the light on. how would i check why its on? i have the software needed. which one should i use to check. noticed the rpm got stuck at 2k at one point. and changed the oil less than 1000 miles ago.... and there is a weird hisssing noise just above the valve cover... help anyone? thanks |
they must've bumped the MAF when they changed oil... or, dislodged some of the vacuum hoses... was it a Jiffy-Lube or a dealer?
plug in your cable, laptop and read the DME codes... as a matter of fact, read any/all error codes - some of them are just stored and not trigger warning lights... |

does carsoft read dme? which program would you use to view codes? |
i would try one at a time, as long as you do not erase the error, it will stay there from one sw to the next until you read it... i bet it has something to do with air or vacuum - based on hissing... is idling rough, by any chance?
|
SES (Service Engine Soon) warning light means that something is wrong in the emissions related electronics.
O2 sensors, MAF, vacuum leak, etc. If you didn't have the problem BEFORE you did some work then you probably knocked something loose or damaged something in the process. |
i checked oil. its good. full annd clean.
i read dde codes and got this 246 not defined 120 signal heissfilmluftmassenmesse |
hmmm... luft = air (luftwaffe, lufthanza...) definetely something to do with the air... probably air intake... check the sensor located on the air intake tube, it is plugged from a side of the tube, visible from the top, right before your eyes, as you are looking at the engine bay... it could be dislodged from the tube, thus not reading the air mass, or got unplugged... meanwhile i will look to see if these numbers mean anything...

maf sensor is good.
|
hot film air mass... sounds so familiar... i have to dig around to see where that thing is located... you have 3.0 - is it an M54 engine?
|
all vacumm lines
3 lline are good and i replaced the intake boot awhile ago. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ yes the m54. inline 6 3.0 |
1 Attachment(s)
this is the item #1 on this diagram... the code is related to that sensor... you sure it is ok?...
|
yes, i became very familiar with those parts having to do with air intake. maf sensor ok.
air filter. is clean K&n without any oil. throttle body has been cleaned when replaceing boot. im thinking its the valve, idle control valve. |
How do you know the MAF sensor is good?
|
ICV? hmmm... i had ICV problem on my E39 with M52 engine.. i had to keep the foot on the gas or that thing would stall...
does your engine stall? the temporary remedy (for a month or two) was to rev up the engine all the way into the red line, and then it was normal for a while... |

the hot film... that is the mass air flow sensor
but dde is the diesel computer. 'dme' thats the gas computer you need to read the codes from |
You still haven't pull the code yet? At least it will tell you to check for instead of you checking random parts. I have a MaxiCan $18 to pull code quick, as well as INPA for more complex stuffs.

hey everyone heres a follow up.
car is running fine now. no lights after a few days. I hooked up my obd gt1 laptop. and checked all the faults. it looks like its a voltage regulator, because the car has spiked before and trans fail safe message appeared on dash. i reset it and its fine now. but as soon as i get a reocurance i will replace alterantor and voltage regulator. great to have the obd laptop tools. |
