Window motor change out.....Do I need to reprogram?

Hi all,
My passenger window motor is toast and I have to change it out. I had an indy shop try to change it out, but they had probs when it was plugged in......It started rolling up and didn't stop until the motor burned out(I didn't get charged for anything). They said that I needed to go to BMW for the repair cuz they need to reprogram the stops for the motor when it is put in. Is this true or can it be done DIY? Thanks for any help/advice.

What kind of bs is that. I know I change a motor and I didn't program anything.

There is a reset procedure for the auto-up/auto-down on the e38/e39 models...but the issue you presented with the shop that tried to install a new motor sounds like something totally different than normal reset procedures following the replacement of a window regulator.

There's a "normalization" process that should have occurred after replacing a properly working window motor/regulator where the "mechanical end stops" (up & down) are learned upon opening & closing the window for the first time. In your scenario...the motor kept going, when it should have stopped upon reaching that "mechanical end".

Once normalization has been learned (learnt)...then the auto-up/auto-down should be initialized. The procedure below is written for the "rocker/toggle" window switches before BWM switched to the "flip-up/push-down) type installed in the e53...just extrapolate the open & close position of the old switches to the new type for reinitializing the e53's window switch:

There is no such thing as a nomalization process on E53 door windows. The front window motors are directly controlled by the front door modules and depending on input from the drivers window switch, the body module will send a signal over the P-BUS to control the passenger front door module, and these door modules are otherwise known as the window switch blocks. The rear door windows are directly controlled by the body module.

Each door has a pressure switch at the top of the window frame. When an object or appendage is blocking the window from closing properly, the anti-trap function will occur and the window motor will operate in reverse to free the object or appendage. Because of this anti-trap switch, this vehicle does not need initilzation for door windows.

The door module or body module knows when to stop the motor as an increase in amperage from the motor will signal end of travel. If however, the door module or body module cannot decipher an increase in amperage, the modules are programmed to stop the window motors after 6-8 seconds.

If the door modules or body modules internal relays are faulted, it may continue to operate the window motor until the motor has burned out. The most common fault is the front passenger window switch.

I knew it. Didn't have an issue with it when I swapped motors. And I used an 04 motor from the drivers side, on my pass door. I even reversed the plug on the motor so that it opens and closes with the usual switch movement.

Soooo I'm bumping this thread because it's old -

Auto window down function works fine on drivers and passenger Windows. Both from my side and passenger side.

Auto up function only works on driver side. Does not work on passenger window from either driver side or passenger side switch.

What to troubleshoot? It's such a little thing but it bothers me. Unless I am losing my mind and auto up on the passenger side never worked.

Not to refute what killcrap said...but did you try the reinitialization procedure for the e38/e39 back in post #3?

Nothing ventured...nothing gained. :)

I can try but it's a bit confusing - I guess doors closed with key in position 1 or 2? How I read the procedure in post 3 is to lower the window all the way - THEN - press button down all the way for 25 seconds and then press up all the way for 25 seconds and the window should move up and down on its own to signal initialization is complete?

I'm guessing to do this from both sides as one touch up does not work on passenger side from either switch.

I think you may have to code it to get the one touch up feature.

^yeah honestly it's possible I never noticed it. Shoot BMW scanner looks so easy compared to NCS expert with check boxes

Btw Qsilver I want to let you know that killcrap seems to be right there is no initialization feature (or at least mine didn't respond to it)

I just talked to my wife and she said it never went auto up for her on her side too she always has to hold it so I guess I'm making a deal over nothing lol
