Plastidip black trim?

Has anyone plastidipped the black trim on their E53? Unfortunately, mine has to sit outside the garage (my F25 has commandeered that spot), and the sun is having it's effect on the black trim. I've tried Back to Black and other snake oils, but have not really achieved the results I'd like.

some people are lucky to see the sun shining on their sky!!!!!

it has been done, it was even discussed rather recently, within a month or two - i hate my old age, as i can't remember in which thread...

have you tried the search? try the search for plastidip and see what pops up in the recent threads...

Thanks TerminatorX5! I've done the search but didn't really find anything pertaining to trim like wheelhouse arches, rocker panels and door trim.

TerminatorX5 04-30-2013 11:58 AM

yeap, somebody did it, and there even was a pointer about how to remove the overspray if you keep the trim on the car, without using knife... for the sake of the research, check the last 5-6 pages of the "what you did for your X5 today?" thread - the thread is MASSIVE with over 200 pages, but the recent pages may prove beneficial...

Thanks! I've known for quite a while that thread was a source of tons of information, but never tried searching within the thread itself, just in the forum.

DTMdan, thanks for the link! That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for!

Did you also do the lower part of your bumpers? How many cans did you need for all that trim?

tmv 04-30-2013 12:48 PM

I would say 1 can for front bumper, 1 can for both sides trims, 1 can for rear bumper.
Make sure you clean them good, spray multiple (~4) light coats

Yeah I did the bumpers as well. I think I used 3 total.

It's held up pretty well so far. Only the front bumper has a few small spots where it's peeling as was expected since that takes the majority of road debris/bugs/etc. My leg rubs against the side trim sometimes when I get out so I have a small peel starting there. Just have to use a thinner and smooth it out and re-dip so NBD. How to Fix PlastiDip (Texture, Tears, Troubleshooting) DipYourCar.com - YouTube

Did you spray everything as-mounted on the car, or did you remove any specific parts before spraying? Did you spray the rocker panels all the way to the underbody? Thanks!
