^Update? I have the same S639A option as you.
My iphone5 found the Bluetooth on my X5 but I don't have the passkey, nor the ULF module where it should be. Since the phone found the Bluetooth, I assume that I have ULF module. Where else could it be?

You've checked behind the panel inside the left rear taillight, and no silver box is mounted there? Not all cars had ULF. Some had what we call a TCU, or Telematics Control Unit. In either case, the Bluetooth pass-key was printed on the label of the module. The 4 numbers next to "PK" are the passkey.

^No silver box where it should be, but Bluetooth is present since my iPhone5 found "BMW84364" when searching for it :dunno: This is on my 06 4.8iS, btw.

if your phone found the BMW84364 (your last 5 digits of VIN), you have the BT unit, regardless if you can find it or not... it really should be below the CD changer, mounted at an angle but could be further below... mine was a BT/with TCU unit, 5th generation... you might have a later version - the 12th generation that i am using now is much smaller that the one that came with the car.
you also can test the voice recognition - press and hold the talking head on the steering wheel for several seconds, until you hear a beep... then say HELP, it will read out the commands that are available to you...

if you have the INPA, you can interrogate the BT module in INPA and get your PIN number from the screen...

When you removed the rear left trim section beneath the cargo floor...you didn't see the TCU/ULF unit mounted to the bracket at an angle?

If you didn't remove #6 in the diagram below...which is the plastic piece mentioned above...there are 3 or 4 nuts (#4 in diagram) that secures the piece to the vehicle...once you pull it up & out of the way, it should expose the TCU/ULF mounted at the bottom of the rack that is on the left side:

Here's another image (from Xoutpost) of the TCU/ULF location...remove the black plastic piece that is at the far left (of the floor) and at the base of the component rack...you can see the very small "silver" tip of the TCU/ULF sticking out & a purple wire at the far left corner of the cargo floor (where it meets the side trim of the tailgate):

Once the floor piece mentioned above is removed (the painted blue area & wires below is where the black piece was), you should see the TCU/ULF unit (the silver component below the CD changer & at an angle...there should be a label somewhere on this component that will have the PK code:

TerminatorX5, my iPhone found the Bluetooth. That makes me believe that I do have the module. I'll hook up INPA afterwork today and see.
Qsilver7, I removed the plastic piece #6 in the diagram and the TCU/ULF module is NOT under there. There is nothing there :dunno:

how about VR? did you try to get the voice help from the system? try it to see... the newer BT ULFs have VRs built in (older ones has a separate module, that came with a "dummy plug")... I was playing with INPA and somehow changed the voices for the Nav system, and somehow it affected the ULF - now it is talking with British accent and the verbiage is different from what it used to be - the meaning is still the same, just different text... Instead of saying DIALING, it says THE NUMBER IS BEING DIALED... other ones are different too...

check your VR, see if that portion works... once you get INPA, you can tell the ULF to go into pair mode and then pair the phone...

I found the TCU under the CD Changer and successfully pair both my phone and wife's. All good now. Thanks all for the help
