i hear this funny knocking noise from the engine i bought a knock sensor on ECS Tuning thinking that would be the fix to the problem and when i brought it to a mechanic he said it sounds like the chains so i ended u buying all the stuff chains and tensioner and all that stuff and when i went to talk to him again and asked him are you sure thats the roblem because i just dumped $1600 on parts and he said oh it might be the Vanos if its not the chains :S

I think I'd find a better mechanic before dumping $1600 into parts I might not need.

A pre-ignition knock ("pinging") is a very distinctive noise, not one that should be mistaken for a mechanical wear position. If it occurs, it usually happens under a light throttle application/engine load condition, and could be verified with a tank of boosted octane level fuel. Timing chain noise will definitely be sourced at the front of the engine, and would most often be a "tinny" sound as a stretched or non-tensioned chain slaps the guides. A deeper "knock" calls for a check of engine oil pressure before anything else is done.
