Need some help with bluetooth
Hey guys, i found in between the car books a paper with the bluetooth passkey code. I thought my car didn't come with bluetooth, especially since I don't have the pairing button in the center console.
Is there another way to pair it? How can I find out if I do have the bluetooth module installed or not? I did some research online and the only articles I found were the ones where the pairing was done with the pair button in the center console. I also looked through the car "telephone" book but didn't see anything about bluetooth. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. |
Use this VIN decoder - it will tell you if your car has a bluetooth... depending on the year of the car, you might not have a pairing button. on later model years the process for pairing is different...
here is the VIN decoder Link |
what year/model your car is? different years equipped with different type modules... other than checking your as-built sheet (always nice to have that info handy), pop the left cover in the trunk, where the nav and/or cd changer would be... if you have a module mounted at an angle, then you might have TCU or a ULF... check to see if you have that module, then we will take it from there
oh, and put a signature of some sort, so we don't ask stupid questions, like what you drive... :) of course you drive a bimmer... lol.. probably an X... could be X3 or one of the old or new 5s... but it is nice to know what you have... |
Hey Terminator, so I did some "due diligence" :). I will also add the signature in just a bit.
I do have a module in the driver's side trunk area. It's installed at an angle, but I cannot see the label on it. I can only see a small section of it. I will have to take the trunk plastics out to see the rest of the module. I also checked on the option list as "ukcran" suggested and I see the following: S639A KOMPLETTVORB. HANDY USA/CDN Preparation f mobile phone cpl. USA/CDN That was the only phone "option" I can see on the list. |
I tried pairing the car per the instructions in "2006 4.8is bluetooth ready" thread but the phone cannot find the car. I don't have the pairing button in the arm rest and in the instructions on that thread it doesn't say anything about pressing the "talk" button while pairing it. Does anyone know when the button should be pressed in the pairing process?
Thanks. |
You should be able to turn on Bluetooth on your phone, then select "Search for Devices". Press the pairing button then. I would guess you need to make sure your car is on so the Bluetooth device has power, depending on how it was hooked up.
If you don't see an available device, it could be the car may not have bluetooth. |
Please do create a signature...it helps us to help you better...it supplies us with enough information to tailor our answers/suggestions etc specficially for your model...it also helps us if we need to look up information or diagrams to answer your questions. There are multiple models, engins, transmissions, and other changes that occur during the production run from 1999-2006.
For instance, your build date would have helped us know specifically how your X5 is equipped for Bluetooth. Especially if it was built after 10/2004. :) If you have the options listed below...you don't need the "pairing button" in the center console. You can use the "talking head" button on the steering wheel: Hint: KL R & KL 15 = ignition position 1 & position 2 http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...ist%20Info.jpg-http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...0e83%20e85.jpg |
Hey Q. The car was built 06/04. When do you actually press the "talking Head" on the steering wheel when you follow the above directions? I'm looking at the instructions 1 - 5 but don't see when to press the button.
Sorry about the signature. It was just added. |
In the instructions above (10/04 build date-up)...you don't have to press the talking head button.
As written, the X5 is automatically in pairing mode for the first 2 minutes of turning the igntion to position 1 or 2 (don't start the car). At the same time, have your phone prepared to search for BT devices...if your X5's is compatible...it will appear on your phone's list as " BMW _ _ _ _ _ " (BMW + the last 5 digits of your X5's VIN). The steering wheel's "talking head" button is how you use Voice Recognition when your phone has been paired to the X5. Sorry for any previous confusion. BTW, when you look down your option list...does it show SA639 option? Your build date puts you on the "cusp"...you may or may not have everything needed. |
Q, my car was built 06/04.
Do you by any chance know if the pairing instructions are different for cars prior to 10/04? |
When I turn the ignition on, and press the TEL button, MID displays "Phone Connected"?
And the light next to TEL is red. |
It seems to me that you have to get to the trunk area and inspect that box. Is there a chance for it to be unplugged or it could be bad.
Where about in the ATL do you live? I'm in Lilburn/Norcross area. If you don't mind making a trip there, we can figure it out together. |
Cool. Thanks for the offer. I'm in Duluth. Can you PM ur phone number?
|
the phone is not paired... with the engine off, get your phone ready to pair, turn the engine on, watch the phone to find BMW ULF 12345, which is the last 5 digits of your VIN. pair the phone using the 4-digit PIN that is printed on the little card in your documents, or on the label attached to the ULF module in the trunk.
If PIN is not accessible, then you need PA Soft, INPA or NavCoder and a cable to "interrogate" the module and pull the pin on your laptop screen. from within that screen you also should be able to force pair the phone, still using the PIN |
the module is connected, otherwise you would not be getting "phone connected?" phrase... but it needs to be put in pairing mode...
TMV, you got INPA? with INPA pairing will take only a couple of minutes |
I do have INPA also, but never really used it too much. Let me give it a try, but I will probably meet with TMV also.

What ever you do...DON'T press the R/T (radio/telephone) button when trying to pair your phone to the X5. What happens when you follow the instructions below? Make sure that your smartphone/cellphone is prepared to search for BT devices within TWO minutes of turning the ignition to position 1 or 2 (don't start the engine). Hopefully you should see "BMW _ _ _ _ _" (the last 5 digits of your VIN should be where the blanks are) in the list of available BT devices...if it appears, then select it. You should now get a prompt to enter the PK code. http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...0e83%20e85.jpg |

I tried following the exact directions and for some reason it doesn't connect. I will try again in a while and I might have to meet with TMV if he has some time.
I will keep u guys posted if I get to the end of it :) |
tell us what you did, and how you did it...
|
I just tried with INPA. Under communication systems, I do not see a BT module. I see a Telephone, but that does not give me the option to pair.
I'm starting to wonder if the module is bad. |
You live about 15 min from me. I'm 1 min from Pleasant Hill and Hwy29 intersection.
I do have INPA and GT1/DIS44 |
I cannot find the BT module with INPA. I removed the plastic tray in the trunk and this is what the box looks like.
There are also 2 cables nearby that were not connected to anything. Does this box look like the BT module? |
2 Attachment(s)
Pictures attached. Problem with the size in previous post.
|
this one looks like combo TCU BT box... there was an issue with these boxes in 2004 - the BMW said it was a BT unit and in reality there was no circuitry to support the claim... yours has a couple of FAKRA antenna connectors, so it might have the BT ability... take a look at the top braket above the Nav unit (if you had the nav unit), there might be a little square antenna with a fakra connector - if it is there, it is the BT antenna...
|
I do have the square antenna. It is connected to the TCU via the white connector on the bottom. You can see it in the first picture. Bottom white connector. I checked and it is connected well to the TCU.
I will contacting TMV in just a bit to see when I can meet with him. I'm running out of ideeas. |
i suspect, that since you get the "connect phone" message, there is a BT unit there... not paired... INPA was supposed to connect to the BT unit...
can you do a complete scan of all the modules/systems using INPA? and then, scroll through the report and see if you pick up on the BT - it could be hidden under a different name, since it is a combo box... the complete scan will attempt to connect to every module E53 could come with, and you will get "no response" for absent modules, like Japanese Nav, or whatnot... but you may find the telephone module, that is not coming up as regular BTmodule, but as something else... |
Ok. Will do the test in just a bit and relay the results. Do you know what else that module controls? I'm trying to figure out if it might be defective.
|
speech... press and hold the talking head button on the steering wheel until you hear a beep... then say HELP... let us know if anything happens...
|
That module, the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) controls E-call functionality in the car, as well as bluetooth connectivity. If your TCU is defective, it may not make the emergency call in the event of an airbag deployment.
If you suspect it's defective, try using EDIABAS to read DTC's out of it, or get it to a dealer for them to check it. |
Speech button does not work. Nothing happens when I press it.
My INPA is version 5.00 and it doesn't have the auto scan feature. I think that was part of the earlier versions. Could I use DIS to scan for the same TCU module? |
alecu, I'll be home after 6:30pm if you want to come over. Text me for address.
|
Hey TMV, cool, I'll text u and will try to stop by later tonight.
I just scanned the car with DIS and no errors in the TCU. At the same time, when I "asked" the TCU for the BT code, it did not display one. I will stop messing with it until I meet with TMV and will let you know what we find out. |
Just curious: what phone are you using? Not sure all of them are support with the BT module in the car.
|
Motorola Razor. :)
|
Galaxy s3
|
of all the phones that i had used with my BT unit, the razor was THE only one that allowed me to read the SMS/text messages on the nav screen... none of other, so called smart phones, could do that...
:) |
Alecu, from what you have posted abouve - your car was originally built with a BT module according to the vin decoding you provided (the " HANDY USA/CDN Preparation f mobile phone cpl. USA/CDN" stands for a BT module).
In order to pair my car with my phone i just pressed a tel button on MID and started searching for the car with my phone (iPhone)... i've tried every other possible key sequence that was described earlier in the post, but only this one worked...may be give that a try |
