Spotted this in Nairobi, Kenya - original mini 1971 Type R model. Amazing shape and sound... owner works on it himself.

The '87 is now ready for the Spring road trip! The plan is Tail of the Dragon, Skyline, Cherahola Skyway, etc. *AND BACK* with ZERO (car) troubles! Here's what we finished up:

When I bought the car, it was with the promise to enable the tach. Well, we can't just have THAT, now can we? Upgraded cluster. Note the Oil pressure gauge in place of the sweeping mpg:

We went through all the electrical. The radio, electric antenna, OBC, and even interior light functions. This is quite the upgrade from the '75 '02. Damn light never has worked. :(

And then, the star of our show... Inspired by a slight overheat on a regional trip this past Summer.. I give thee.. The Zionsville aluminum with electric fan for belt driven fan delete... This thing is ready for a roadie, fellas!

 Where did you get the oil pressure gauge that replaced the MPG gauge? I like that. I used to have a boost gauge in my last e30 that had a turbo M42. I'm one of the few who like the sweeping MPG gauge, but if there is a more practical use for that space... I'm all for swapping it.

I love e30's. Can't wait to start working on mine... after a host of other projects including solar so I can give CPS the finger. :D

TLDR: I found the place that did the speedo repair. Bavarian Restoration - Bavarian Restoration

I LOVE the sweeping MPG gauge! It reminds me of the E24 my parents had. I used to LOVE watching it sweep! I SO wanted it in my '75 '02. :( And so it was a welcome nod in all 3 E39's, the 3.0 E53, and our current 4.4 as well. If there's one thing I'd do besides a very SERIOUS resto-mod upgrade on the *rest of the 4.8is cluster, it would be to bring back the sweep. Feels like youth!

So, rather than just repair the cluster, my seller agreed to foot the bill for a refurb if I paid for the PSI plumbing. I didn't see 10% of the E30 purchase price coming out of that, but we live, we learn I suppose. :dunno: I cant find the place he sent it off to right away, but I may have the name in a box in the car.

They do ALLLL sorts of upgrades for the E30.. the goal here was to add information practical to the longevity of the i6. (I still like the sweeper) :stickpoke

Ah yes. I'm familiar with them. Had an E30 AFM refurbed by them at one point many moons ago. Thanks for jogging my memory. I like some of those options... hmmmm. Only money right? Can't take it with us. :D

And yes, I still love the sweeping MPG gauge. Most ppl hate them and call them useless, but I've always enjoyed trying to keep it pegged at 30+mpg during road trips regardless of the chassis I was in. Obviously it was more difficult in some than others.

The diesels have a sweeping "MPG" gauge as standard but it works in reverse from this - the lower the needle reading, the better the "mileage". This is because it's reading fuel used for a fixed distance (l/100km), so our game is to keep the needle as far to the left (reading lower) as possible.

*edit* Just Googled the OEM dash image - looks like the MPG gauge is similar to the diesel version, with the better consumption being on the left. I assumed the reverse from your use of the term "pegged" (usually meaning hard to the max value. - and usually this is to the right)

The E38 is officially mechanically sound. Aluminum radiator, KW coil overs, and Turner solid core suspension parts. Here she sits in the upholstery shop lot. Black suede headliner will join the black interior bits that I purchased with this in mind ab a year ago.

I do like that stance.
