Might seem like a lot of work but why not swap the rings out for a set of SMD rings I did this to a set of angel E39 factory head lights on my E39 540 a few years back looked and worked great.

The SMD rings fitted in my pre facelift but post 2002 lights so had to cut the lens off to fit them and re seal.

Very bright and I run these as DRL's

I wired mine up a different way to the link above, it's a far easier way and using the 5 pin relay like I did I was able to also wire them to come on when unlocking too.

How I wired it:

Few electrical mods DRL's and auto lights on/off with central locking

It's easier said than done on facelifted housings. The factory rings are lit via optical fiber, so in addition to opening the permasealed housings, you need to make some pretty bold modifications to the rings themselves in order to mount a set of led's descretely behind them.

I opened my housings and backlit my rings with COB led rings when I swapped my projectors. To date it's the only solution to obtaining a daytime visible angel eye on a facelifted X.

Same with the E39 facelift headlights they also have the optical fiber fed rings, the rings remove very easily there just clipped into the housing then I fitted the new rings into the space the old rings came from, when i carried out this mod they didn't have SMD rings so I fitted CCFL ones as it was about 6-7 years ago i did this.

Lens removal isn't a big issue It would be done the same way I had to remove mine on my factory Xenons, cutting it where I did once bonded and sealed back together and fitted you cant see that they've been apart even if you look under the bonnet/hood:
