Hi Fellas - Haven't been around lately. Sorry for the delayed response. I am not sure I still have those PDF's. I will have to check and see.

What update do I have to do to my account to get the images back?

AquilaBMW 09-05-2017 01:36 PM

Okay Dokay..... I see the problem. Haven't used Photobucket in ages. Guess they lured everyone into using them and now want $400 a year to host pictures and enable sharing them on other sites like this.

Anyone know of an alternative to P-Bucket? I am not interested in giving them $400 of my dollars as I actually don't find their site to be user friendly anymore.

Here's a Pelican DIY for the 4.4i:

BMW X5 M62 8-Cylinder Starter Replacement (E53 2000 - 2006) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article

The 3.0i is a different animal and the intake really needs to come off to do it right. Some have managed to do it from underneath, but it's a pig of a job. I use a Torx socket in a socket cap with an offset box wrench to grab the socket cap.

Thanks Scott!

I have the beginnings of the dreaded sluggish pinion shaft retraction squeal and will be doing the starter soon.

Any recent deals found on good quality starters?

Sounds like it's not an area I want to skimp on based on the labor involved to change one. :dunno:

Get hold of a secondhand starter and strip and rebuild, they are dirt cheap on ebay and several of us in the UK have done this.
The bearings are sintered and require a 24hour soak in oil (engine oil ok), then rebuild .

Just did this. The bolts are now @$20 each. There is nothing special about it. Searched here and there is a big thread on it

https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...y-16-each.html

Ended up ordering what someone on that thread found. It is slightly shorter than the old one, but that's probably because the old one is stretched which is why it's one time use. Some people reported reusing the old one and some report creaking noise, probably because they didn't torque well enough.

The bolt and nut I got from Fastenal are 15mm. It is a slightly smaller diameter for the bolt head, but it is the same thread. Probably should have got bigger washers. Also, it is not completely threaded for the whole length. Used an extra washer on the front to make sure the nut didn't bottom out on the un-threaded area, but I don't that was even needed.

Will inspect it for a bit to make sure it's good to go and then just inspect on oil changes.
