If/When I replace my wood trims I'll probably relocate the iPod cable to the cupholders at that time.

That is what I did back when I had the X5 and the Dension interface kit. I ran the cable under the console, and up through a cup holder. I then took the removable tray that sits above the cup holders, designed for pens, and often called a lobster tray (due to the shape). I cut out the shape of the iPod in the tray with a Dremel, and it sat flat, with the cable hidden. Driver and passenger could both operate it, and the cover slid closed to hide it when parked. The tray was disposable, so there were no marks left in the vehicle when I sold it. You can still find the trays around, and they fit all E53 models, although BMW only supplied them with new vehicles up through 2003 or so, from memory. Lots of posts on this subject (iPod, lobster tray) if you search back to the 2005 time frame.

How did you route the wire? Did you drill a hole in the ashtray?

Someone else did the same but they had the plate cover over it.

mine is on the side carpeted piece of the center console from the passangers side.. hidden by the seat.

Glovebox was a big no and completley useless in my opinion

finally got a chance to secure my aux.

I like where I put mine. simple installation. Just drill one hole and tighten fitting. I also didnt drill any hole in the ashtray.

I have mine laying loose in the glove box. I don't have a ashtray, so I can't fit it there.

I've thought about fitting it in the rear center console, where the IN/OUT stuff is located on cars with the TV option. (Like this http://finncdn.no/mmo/2013/12/vertic...4481597_xl.jpg ) But that would require a long AUX-cable.

How about cutting out a little piece of the coin holder in the armrest, and placing it there? What do you guys think about that? That way it stays hidden when you want to hide it. I have a pretty thin AUX-cable, so it would be no problem closing the armrest with the cable sticking out.
