Cool?

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It's nice the shop took responsibility for their incompetence.

After all that has happened. Especially you noticing the oil and them saying it was not from your x5 instead of them putting it on a lift and checking. And then the fuel line disconnecting while driving spraying fuel on a hot engine (Possible catastrophe)

I would advise bringing it to a local Dealer and asking for a full Inspection of the components involved with the work....On the shops dime of course!

Seriously! I guess an engine fire would have been the icing on the cake. Going to drive it and see what happens.

I wouldn't drive it unless I have a fire extinguisher in the passenger seat with the pin pulled ready to fire! This and the oil puddle thing are in excusable, I'm sure in the back of their minds they know this is the last time they will be servicing a vehicle you own. And they probably know these incidents are being documented somewhere out there on the worldwide web...lol!!!

I think the better route was to fix your engine. Never know what a used engine has been through.

Even with the best mechanics things get overlooked or mistakes are made but they have really outdone most. In spite of that, I think you have taken the best course of action. Perhaps you can negotiate some level of guarantee, assuming all is now well?

Did they check the pan for metal and the cylinders for scoring while they had the heads off?

Well I have the vehicle back and all seems well. As frustrating as it has been the shop did stand by their work and take care of everything. Some things are excuseable but others were not. In the end we will see what happens.

The shop did say that the rest of the engine looked good and the did drop the pan to check for anything left over. They have also offered to change the oil again in 1000 miles just to make sure there is nothing left that would not get caught by the filter.

The biggest issue is knowing the shop is on the hook if the engine gives out whether they accept it or not. I am going to drive it a little and fix a few small things and then probably get rid of it.

The only thing that has not been replaced to my knowlege in the last 3 years is the torque convertor. Runs as strong as ever but just not sure I want to take the chance.

Thoughts from those who have done or had done the same work?

I will probably take it to the BMW stealership to have them check the car out completely. It will be fun just to see if they say I need new timing chains or an oil change!

Before they change the oil at 1k miles, there may be some value in pulling a sample and running a Blackstone lab test, though value will be limited by not having a prior 'comparison' sample. Evidence creation for when you have to argue with them this summer about paying for a rebuilt engine.

Same work as in head work or torque convertor?

if the engine was run multiple times without oil pressure, that makes every reciprocating and rotating part suspect and likely to fail. Main bearings, cam bearings, piston rings, valves, VANOS, and of course the new chain guides...
considering it is running now, I wouldn't drive it anymore and sell.
while it was in the shop, I would have required a new engine or complete rebuild replacing any parts that were scored (cams, crank, valves, etc)
