04 4.4i tranny issue question

Hi Guys, I was finally able to pin point when this probelm was happening.

X5 is already warmed up, and I am in motion, then lets say I turn onto another road or get onto the highway when I am already in motion. The only thins I cannot really tell is that it happens from either first to second or second to third.

the issue:
It holds the gear way too long and then slams into second or like above sometimes into third, if I take my foot of the gas it lessens the slam. It does not do it all the time, as in not every day, but it is getting more frequent.

We have reprogrammed already. My mechanic, a cert Indy shop was saying that was a vaccum system in the tranny or transfer case that might need to be replaced or something like that
who has expereinced this before? and what did you do
thanks

sounds like the gears are slipping the tranny fluid level was checked?

Mine does this too, but only when there is a ton of snow on the ground. When it's dry out the trans functions perfectly normal.

Fluid level fine in fact flash and filter done
Mine does it on dry road never in snow
It is like when I want to get up to speed fast or like merge onto the highway and try to get up to highway speed quick sometimes it also triggers the failsafe mode but I shut it off wait a few minutes and the failsafe clears

could be the clutch packs going in the tranny hopefully not.

You could go on forever supposing what it could be. This is a topic that's been done to death, yet will continue to live as long as we have these problematic automatics in our X's.

Do a search, you will find dozens of threads on this.

:iagree:

Could be an internal leak in the trans which doesn't allow it to build up fluid pressure unless the engine and trans pump is rotating at a high rotation and then it just SLAM into the next gear. Sounds like a BIG $$$ repair is in your future.

searched through almost 500 threads on tranny issues on E53 4.4i it seems everyone has a little bit of everyone else's problem lol (sorry it is not funny)
but there is really no real solution to the problem if you have already reprogrammed, flush and changed fluid, but to just replace tranny?? there has got to be a specific part doing this, or is it by the time you find it just easier to replace the tranny

Isambard 01-28-2014 12:19 AM

Not necessrily so. I found a thread once about some guy who had done almost everything he could to the tranny. He eventually replaced the valve body after $$$'s spent on the other stuff. The problem was fixed.

I'm not sure if your symptoms are the same or related, but it may be worth having a look at that thread..
