Quicksilver, found a good thread on possible problems that you car may have!
Surely, the thread has some good advice and tips! You gave us hardly any feedback on your problem ,only stating that your car is smoking!
You can only have white or black smoke and this is all mentioned in the thread,so surely there is enough information to cover your problem too:dunno:
There cant be anything else !If you are more specific ,then maybe we can help you more:thumbup:

Black smoke is a good sign ,nothing to worry about.
Our friend quicksilver pointed out that useful thread and if you read post #2 you will find a good tip..Air filter!

Black smoke on standstill can be the engine not getting enough air or is over fuelling !Remember that at standstill ,the engine is not under load.Shortage of air can be a clogged air filter or a leak in a turbo, inlet pipe or a vacuum.
As soon as you drive off ,the engine sucks more air and black smoke not so noticeable!
Overfuelling ,can be a leaking injector but its all related to air supply as not enough air ,it will emit black smoke anyway.
The other thing that comes to mind and probably maybe it ,is your car having a remap and the mapper increased the fuel volume too much at idle, hence it smoking and then clearing up as you drive away and you have load and boost pressure.
Difficult to tell since you havent given us much info on your car.

Black smoke under what conditions; engine warmed up, cold, intermediate? Does this happen only at idle? Do you wait until the DDE light goes off and then start the car? Where is the smoke (rear of vehicle or towards left front door sill?

What maintenance has been done recently? What year X5 do you have? Mileage of car? Age of air filter, oil filter, last oil service? Do you indeed have LL04 rated oil in the sump? Has your breather (loo roll) been serviced or (better) converted to the vortex type?
Do you know what fault codes your car presently has logged?

Think we are worrying more about it than the OP!
Seems that one of his posts has been deleted where did have some more information, regarding his issue,no idead why:dunno:
However ,if you look at his other posts clearly, you will see that he has already confirmed that black smoke was at idle and cleared up as soon as he drove off! This being the case,he already got his answer!
With regards to the DDE light,as you should know, this only stays on more than one sec ,under freezing conditions, which is the only time the engine needs the glow plugs!
I am out of this thread,as OP not provididng enough feedback and we are just wasting our times !At least we tried to help!
