Front suspension USD 4000 part only ??????
 

Hello everybody,

seems my X wants some more attention again.
Have put her to the dealer for a service (173.000km / 107.500miles) and got a call the next day:

Seems that the front shocks are not to good enough any more and they need to be replaced. The dealer also wanted to replace the springs because "they might break next after this mileage"....?

Cost of the parts only would be USD 4000.- !!!!!!!!!

Is that prize something that makes any sense? I do not have any special suspension and I have found shocks for ~USD100 per piece.

Additional question: is this a possible DIY repair? I mean I have tools to compress the springs .... is the rest easy?

Would really love to get some assistance from you.

Replacing struts is a straightforward DIY especially since you have spring compressor. I would not replace the springs. It is extremely unlikely they will ever break. I suggest checking the rest of the front suspension for wear at the same time. Once you are done you will need to have it aligned.

I don't know what you are pricing that is $400 so have no input.

What year and model do you have?

I have the E53 3.0d from 2002.

Any advice around about the DIY? Video, pics, ...... ?

4,000 is stupid. I would absolutely do it yourself or find an independent shop to install them. Its not a hard job. You could even go with a nice set of Bilstien struts and some sport Eibach springs for 1/4th the money they quoted you. Good luck my friend.

It's definitely DIY'able tbh. I wouldn't pay that sort of money.

I replaced all my air suspension on mine with coilovers.

I have a used set of KW's if you fancied it..lol

A set of KW's still doesnt go anywhere near this and they are top of the line fully adjustable.

Nor does replacing my front 2 air struts and rear bags.

Guy is full of it, i wouldnt take my car there again. If you are mechanically inclined read up on it, get some tools and DIY it.

The e53 has a very simple strut mount design, compared to how some other vehicles or newer ones are setup.

$4,000 is a major ripoff. Looked for a DIY on youtube, no luck. Try a search here

If the spring are rusted/pitted you will want to replace them. Corroded springs are known to snap.
