That could be the case if the LS engine were a plug and play swap. As it is whatever you saved buying a cheaper engine will get devoured by the expense to make the LS functional and integrated with BMW electronics. There might be a chance the LS swap would be a good idea if there was an aftermarket conversion kit.

Plenty of people swapping LS engines into a BMW Including this girl.

I don't know how many of the universe of BMWs or X5s are done. My comments were about things to consider if swapping a LS into an E53, primarily due to AWD and the electronics

I've done swaps of engines and transmissions when things were simple. It wasn't too terrible if there was a complete conversion kit but when we started having to do the design and fabrication to relocate things like the starter, alternator, fabricating motor mounts, headers, etc. or finding a starter, alternator etc that had the performance needed and would fit in the space. It got expensive quick and took countless discouraging hours. Even with a complete swap kit it took a few tanks of gas before everything was sorted out and was what I would call reliable. I was all about performance and if that is anyone's goal it doesn't take long before TQ increases start finding the weakest link in the drivetrain or suspension. Not much out there for an X5. I'm a big fan of the LS engine. Hope somebody drops one in.

Only thing I would worry about is adapting it to the trans personally. The electrical issues I could handle.

A swap with a manual trans is the easiest of course. The auto trans computer would be the harder of the systems but its doable.
