bigger rims BUT better handling?

So I am thinking about getting 22's for my X. But I also understand that 22's might make my car not handle as well because of the size of wheel.
Now Im wondering instead of getting something that "looks good" how about i go more towards the sporty direction and get wheels that would be sportier for my X.For example the LEMANS x5 wit those gold BBS's looked super sporty and super sick!

Now what if I got like 21x11(325 in rear) in the rear and 21x10(275 in front)
maybe some BBS wheels TThat set up right there seems more of a "x5 track set up" That set up totally might sound wrong, BUT what set up might work as an advantage to the X5's handling as far as wheel/tire sizes go.

So please guys help me out im a noob at this.
Suggest some "wheel/tire" ideas that might not make my car "bling bling" but more "sporty"

17" rims would be better for handling... lighter (less rotational mass) and more choices for better rubber with better sidewall handling characteristics...

either that or get with chefwong to get some custom made RAC Monolites for the X5 in the proper widths and offsets...

ALL other wheels cannot match up... PERIOD.

I wonder how many people will flame me for saying this.

You might not get all that better handling with a staggered setup. You possibly may be better off going the same width all around, go wider in the back and you increase understeer.

Okay, now that's out..

BBS RXII is the only rim I know of that fits the X5 and can take the weight in the size of 21". However it's a cast/spun rim so weight isn't the main consideration. If you're looking for handling and performance your best bet is a set of custom rims.

Custom meaning.. one piece magnesium.

Three piece rims and what not are light weight, but they are very expensive for not all that greatness. Most of it is mainly because it's cheaper to manufacturer for the company, that's why all those custom offsets can be picked.

This is what you are looking for..

- Wide rim (I'd say 10.5 all around with 285 all around)
- Very light rim, less than 30 pounds if you can
- Weight near the center of the wheel
- Strength

If you are really serious about tracking the car, you have basically two options. 'Custom' BBS rims or magnesium rims.

Those will be very expensive, and don't really look that unique nor hot.

If you're just looking for an aggressive street setup, let me know and I'll try to help you out to the best of my abilities.

hayaku, is there anything you'd disagree with in Post #3?

mag wheels are light and strong, but they do crack and worst off... they burn... like poof!

RAC monolites.. check it out... custom offsets, custom sizes... spread forge billet alum... its the best there is...

I saw, they estimated 20.5lb for a 20 inch rim.
I smell a group buy..... :D

not really...

just to add that bigger is not better... remember, the overall diameter is the same whether you have a 17" rim or a 22" rim.. the overall diamter of the tire is the same. you just have a taller sidewall with the smaller rim... and a shorter sidewall with the bigger rim.

you have pros and cons with how stiff a sidewall should be too...

What tires would you run on a 22" rim to keep the overall diamater of the wheels near OEM specs? If my 20's currently run 315/35's in the rear...what would 22's need? That would be my question. If your X5 sits higher, because of the wheels, then yes handling is adversly effected.

Have a look at these BBS 10.5x21 "RX" wheels with 285/35 tyres.

22" tyres with +/- same overall OEM diametre:

-Dunlop Sp9000 285/30..(rolling diametre the same as OEM 315/35/20)
-Pirelli Scorpion 295/30..(rolling diametre the same as OEM 235/65/17)

Physics tells me that handling should improve with the 22"(even more!) at the expense of ride quality.
