Listen for the Vanos rattle / knock,. Make certain transmission reverse is solid, as these transmission and few other BMW's fail in reverse. Nice and good luck.

Whatever you do, take your time and do lot's of reading here, go back several years if you have to, it may save you a lot of wallet pain in the future. The V8 models tend to have more issues than I6 models, there will be oil and fluid leaks that will drive you insane trying to track them down. Then there will the usual things like broken window regulators, broken door handles, remote keys that stop working, and various electrical issues. Also keep in mind you're buying a 15 year old vehicle, you're upgrade may suddenly turn into a downgrade while eating away at your wallet, these things are very maintenance intensive.

thanks for all your input fellas. ive called him up , hopefully going to see it tomorrow morning, , I have done a lot of reading since ive joined the forum , and I by the looks will have a lot more, it seems my old e46 was a bit of a maintenance whore as well. so used to not having any money ;)
but do you think that if it was going to break (handles and things like that) they would have broke already?.
if something was going to break it would have broke by now?

Steve

Congrats ! First 1 or 2 years may be a bit costly in repairs (depending on previous owner maintenance) .... If u have spair money go with AFE air intake stage II ! Believe me, with V8 at 3k+ RPM it is pure sex :)) enjoy!

im sat here doing the as I see it, the worse thing you can do before buying a "new" car is read forums and watch utube videos

so far I got , and in no particular order.
gearboxes, vanos, can tensioners and guides, electrics , bushes, sunroofs, various engine bits.
everything there I can tackle myself apart from gearbox and chain guides
