fuel tank cap query
 

hello, does anyone elses fuel tank cap have a 10-15cm lenghth of rubber attached to the top it that runs to the hinge of the flap that covers the fuel tank filler cap?

mine does, sorry no pic just a pic of what it should look like, and i guess its to make sure you dont take the fuel tank cap off and leave it lying around when filling up with fuel (dont it bofore left it on top of car it my 1978 audi), went to fill up today and noticed my piece of rubber was cut, checked realoem and they dont show it, just a ca is shown, ....gonna try gluing it also use heatshrink to get the 2 pieces to stick....dunno is this little bit of rubber sold separate to the fuel cap?

I would use marine grade heat shrink as it already has an adhesive on the inside of the tube.

I bet a 2" piece centered on the cut would hold it.

Ah thanks fella, hmm doubt I can find marine grade heatshink out here, so I have to checked ebay for that , what if i coat the area either side of the cut rubber with some suitable glue and then pass the heatshrink sleeve over cut area and apply heat ?

I have the same cap and Yes You can hook up the rubber cord..................

hello, thanks for reply, How do you mean hook up the cord? use heatshrink to bond the two parts into one? just found a guy online selling for reasonable cost....its that or either i just coat the rubber with glue and then heatshrink over this gluey/tacky area and hope it holds

Or just forget about that rubber strap and insert the cap in the place designed for it while fueling; which is on top of the lid in the green slot ..mine gets in the way ..I never forget to put it back..

Sure. I would use silicone if it were me. A SMALL amount.... It will ooze out of the ends.

Ditto 4.8is...if your safety string has snapped into 2 separate pieces...it is NOT sold separately.

You can do as mentioned in the earlier posts and try to patch the two halves back together with heatsink...but more than likely it will fail again if the "cord" is becoming brittle.

You're more likely to have better success with the 2nd suggestion and that is to cut the cord...and forget about it. Just insert the cap into its little green holder when refueling. At least the only way to loose it would be to drive off with the fuel flap still open. :yikes:

erally appreciate all the replies, to be fair yes that rubber band did get in the way of removing and replacing fuel cap....so may just chop it off and see....or go for the heatshrink experiment and see....again thanks to all who replied
