rear muffler, grounding strap?

Does any one know if this is some sort of grounding strap or is it a safety to hold the muffler up if the rubber splits?

The other side is tattered and broken. It looks like it was copper?? I lower the boat into salt water and can't always rinse right away. I am going to "jimmy rig" something up and not sure if it needs to be copper or just a safety chain?

Thanks

My "fix", no cost - made from leftovers in the basement

why would an exhaust needs an earthing strap

kevinkay 08-24-2014 05:27 PM

Huh?.......you do have a BMW....

Because when the Germans find an issue with 1 part they add 3 parts to fix it.

No, it's a worldwide thing. It's not just a muffler which has an earthing strap. Have a good poke around underneath any modern vehicle and you will probably find 4 or 5 of them lurking around. They simply help equalise any build-up of charge. This prevents static (reducing the likelihood of spiking sensitive electronics), and also helps reduce the likelihood of galvanic corrosion in some components (like mufflers for example - if you ever saw how much water collected in mufflers in cold-climate vehicles it might give you an idea).

im going to look outside and see if I got 1 on mine , now . got me curious :)

Which muffler are you looking at ryoken. The pics posted by kevinkay appear to show the front box, not the rear.

Also, his vehicle is a different specification to yours (yours being an '01 v8, his being an '06 I6) - there's more than a slight possibility that may have something to do with it...
