Timing chain r&r

Starting this fun job but cant seem to find the good diy i had found awhile back can someone give me a link. Yes i searched but over half way tore down and need some details. Thanks!

GSXRliterbikz 12-18-2014 07:23 PM

I have one in the e38 sub forum of bimmerfourms. It's an e38, but basically the same. Only change is the x5's external oil seperator.

Thanks guys. I pulled radiator and there is plenty of room for an impact.

diyanich 12-19-2014 02:31 PM

Get the crankshaft secured with the tool or something hadnmade, don't torque just with the flywheel pin inserted, that way you may destroy the housing.

Yea never thought about that going back together. Bimmertool rental kit have that tool? If not ill jus make something.

diyanich 12-20-2014 01:22 PM

Post #84 here:

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ide-rails.html

and if not, pelicanparts.com sells one for under $70

GSXRliterbikz 12-20-2014 02:15 PM

I used an old crank pulley. I welded a bar to one side that can rest against either the ac compressor or the frame rail. Works great.
I would also suggest not using just the flywheel pin to hold it.

How many miles does the timing chain last? Had over 130k miles in my 540 and it was fine. Thanks

powerstrokenstang 12-22-2014 02:21 PM

Im only at 118k but was doing upper cover gaskets and vanos rebuild figured may as well almost there.

powerstrokenstang 12-22-2014 07:14 PM

Looked over these some do you have to drop oil pan? Any diys on an x? I hope not just replaced the pass side axle the day before i started this.

GSXRliterbikz 12-22-2014 07:16 PM

Lower oil pan needs to come off. But not the upper

powerstrokenstang 12-22-2014 07:22 PM

Got ya. Just looked when u saide that axle goes threw upper. What if the gasket tears on upper anyone had luck with rtv. Dont really wanna drop everything on this jewel. And with my luck it will. At 118k should i bother with them or just do this topend stuff. It only gets about 10k miles a year.

GSXRliterbikz 12-22-2014 07:25 PM

If it rips, just cut it flush with the block and put a new section on. Then rtv where old and new meet

powerstrokenstang 12-22-2014 07:28 PM

Ok i dont mind that. Ill continue on

powerstrokenstang 12-30-2014 08:28 PM

Ok so i feel like a newb for asking but how do i get to the rear pwr steering pump support?? Thats my current hold up

diyanich 12-30-2014 09:39 PM

With an open ended wrench and a lot of patience.

Sorry to interrupt...I just did the job and got everything back together. Car run, drive and idle good. But I still have the p0021 error code. Is my timing off from bank 2 (driver side)? Do I need to open both valves to have it retiming to just open only the driver side to retime? Btw, I did switch the cps but still get the p0021. So the cps still good. Any input is much appreciate. Thanks

diyanich 01-01-2015 10:06 AM

At first I thought that I had only one code, but after I scrolled the generic scanner's screen and saw the second one.
I drive like this and except for the Check Engine there's not much difference for now,I mean in the performance or at least I can't feel any.
Now it seems the only way to get rid of those codes the easy way:

Yes, I saw that video before I start the process. I did check both side thru that hole make sure both sides lineup perfectly before I bolt everything up. Somehow I am still off a little to the bank 2 (driver side). My bank 1 code when away after the process. Can I just adjust the vanos on bank 2 only which out touching the bank 1 side? Or do I have to open up both sides again to get it retiming? It took me over 30+ hours to get it completed. It's a pain to go thru the whole thing again. Is there a way to tell if the code go away after the retiming before putting all the parts together? Thanks

diyanich 01-01-2015 05:34 PM

Keep in mind that the upper timing cover may not be seated properly and that alters the rest, while the other one can be in the right position and throw no codes.

You using the right tools? With the right timing tools and following the procedure, it's pretty much guaranteed to work.

Jleecare 01-02-2015 10:50 AM

Yes, I purchased the complete m62 tool set from ebay for $300. See link below. I just retiming the engine again...everything run smooth and idle good. But the engine light still on for p0021. Did I miss something here? Could the vanos solenoid cause the p0021 as well? Can the solenoid be swap from bank 1 to bank 2? I need the p0021 gone to pass the emission test. Thanks

I have a complete set off eBay too and yet I have the codes.
People reported that using this they were able to get rid of the codes.
G.A.S. BMW M62tu Professional Cam Tool Kit
Some changed the Vanos solenoids and had the codes gone after that.
I think that in every single case you have too many variables that it would be really difficult to apply somebody's experience on yourself.
Given that the code is set by getting reading fro only 3 sensors( two camshaft and one crankshaft) that means that it really comes to properly adjusting you bank 2's timing plate.
That's my opinion.
Now,to do that properly, due to PITA tolerances reported by other guys here and on the other forums,I think, you would need to lock all the camshafts.
Correct me if I am wrong, because I am to do that myself next summer.

I just found this useful thread from Scott. I'll try to open the bank 2 and move the plate sensor .06 degree clockwise to see if the code go away. I think the tool set for the jigs might off a little when lock down the plate sensor. Will see what happen.

To kinda go along with that ive not decided if i want to buy or rent the tools. But which kit may be the best. I may just buy even if i do the bimmer tool rental one. Do any of the others have the biesian vanos press tool?

Jleecare 01-04-2015 12:49 AM

I just put everything back this evening. So far no code show up yet after 20 miles test drive. Now I have to deal with the "the suspension inact" msg and no radio power. Found water on the battery compartment. The radio module could be bad with soak in water and also the air suspension sensor as well. I didn't not touch the vanos units. Just did the chain rail guides and all other parts in there. If you need the tools. I can loan out for $50+shipping (I also have custom made crank bolt holder tool and fan clutch wrench). Took me three times to set the timing....easy step but somehow it hard to get it right at the first try.

powerstrokenstang 01-04-2015 10:20 AM

Congratz on getting it straight. Thanks for the rental offer. May just do that if i decide not to buy. Any pics of your damnper holder?
