Hi, thankyou all for your advice/input, I had a read of manual and it said,,preferred bmw longlife 01, so I searched online bmw LL 01 and to my surprise most off the listings were Mobil 1, I was expecting to see castrol as that is what is printed on my oil filler cap, so after much deliberation I narrowed it down to Mobil 1 5/30 or castrol edge 5/30 as 5pterson has suggested, is 5/30 the preferred ratio.

Ended up going on castrol website and they recommended castrol edge 0w30 so that is what I ended up buying, regarding the breather vortex replacement I bought the upgrade but am a little concerned about the seating off the breather part, is it correct that it is just pushed into place and held with a o ring,

A bit late too this :(

The vortex is just pushed into place and can only be fitted one way.The 2 bolts that then secure the case will also hold the filter in place.Just make sure the "o" ring is in place as per pic(right) below

You should always go by what Bmw recommends and never by oil companies, especially on their websites, which can be wrong and misleading!
I had a look at the Castrol UK website and do they do indeed recommend 0w 30 for the 3.0D 2001-03 ,but then they also recommend the same for all other X5s,including the 3.0i!!!!They have a selection for you to choose a 3.0D 2001-03 with DPF..WHAT!!!!The 3.0D never had one!
Then they also state 6.5 litres ,for all X5s .which we all know is wrong!

Regarding the LL01 and LL04 ,both mean Longlife ,with the LL04 having a lower SAPS content which was made to be more suitable for DPF cars.
In non DPF cars ,you can use both!

Thanks mate, think I might go back to toilet roll type and change it every air filter change, iv now put a video on YouTube titled bmw e53 ticking noise, I'm probably wrong but got feeling it's coming from the silver/chrome thing in the video.

Well ,thats a pretty good video and I can hear what is more of tapping noise between 0,48 and 0,54.
Thats a strong noise ,like something cracked or an exhaust gasket went.
A loose bolt or screw would also make that noise.
Maybe a tappet as I said before.Maybe also be an injector knocking noise.

Have you verified all the bolts and everything you did on the oil change?
Did you reconnect the oil breather pipe to the airbox?

That chrome /silver part is your vaccum pump, and that naturally makes a small ticking noise as its producing vacuum?
Have you noticed any performance drop after oil change?

Have you checked that you didnt loose any tools or dropped any bolts somewhere ,when you did the oil change?
