Got about 95k miles on my X diesel now. The price of the replacement tank assembly is ridiculous. Curious if anyone thinks I could get BMW to replace my tank/sensor combo at no cost. Worth a shot to take it to my local dealership?

Two sensors are being replaced on the tank itself - temperature and level sensors since those are common or even only two to fail. Where and how to get them is different story.

So after picking and reinstalling mine I can report tank fix was a success. However my second CEL was due to pump on top of active tank started leaking thus losing pressure. All of the wheel well was cover in crystallized DEF. Fix was new pump :dunno:

I don't know if my pump issue was due to tank being transported, but I have it home and plan to take it apart whenever I have enough time. It looks pretty straight forward mechanism - definitely not worth hundreds of $$$

Welp, looks like I drew the short straw and it's my turn for the P205C code: Active DEF tank temperature and/or level sensor issue. Luckily I'm still under CPO, so BMW will pay for this.

Question for those who had this before:

1. How long was the parts back order at BMW?

I recall reading all the threads on DEF tank backorder for over a month, but upon my brief read on P205C fixes, it appears it's just a set of sensors that needs to be replaced. Will BMW actually replace the entire DEF tank?

2. Will driving with the code for a month do any damage?

I anticipate BMW will cover it under warranty. Unfortunately, I need my X5 and cannot take their loaner b/c I need the stupid city parking sticker for my wife's daily commute/parking. Logically thinking about this, as long as I'm not in a cold climate and I fill up the DEF, I should be okay for a month right?

You will be fine to drive for a while, i drove mine for over 3 months and then the code went away so who knows.

Do you fill your own DEF? I filled both tanks till they overflowed and got the codes a week later. Im thinking just filling the passive tank with few gallons is the key. Let the passive tank fill the active tank like is was designed to do. Not sure if that was my issue but no codes for almost a year since they went away.

you ONLY fill the passive tank. That's why you got the error then.

If you are only supposed to fill the passive tank then why are there two filler tubes? One for passive and one for active.

I fill both active and passive.
