P205C code for active DEF tank e70 35d
Question: Is there really a circuit in the active tank for sensing the temperature of the DEF or is the computer cleverly interpreting the ohm values of the 10k resistors with temp variation? INPA readout shows -4.17 degC.
On Monday wife tells me the yellow "water tap" light is on and picks me up from the airport in the Tundra. Hooked it up to INPA yesterday morning and read codes (jet lag is a wonderful thing....). Then I read a long thread on B'fest and one thing does not become clear to me as per the above question. The active tank was replaced at least once on my car and I am not sure if it was replaced a second time, gotta find the records. In the mean time sent an inquiry to an SA in Fairfax to see if there is a warranty on these dang tanks. If no warranty or goodwill from BMW then I might send it to Toronto to be fixed. They provide a lifetime warranty and that seems attracive since I don't feel like having this problem every two tears. |

I'd call BMW NA. My 2011 35d (with 26k on it mind you) is in the shop right now (again) for some damn sensor related to the diesel system. Just got a call that while programming the new sensor the CAS unit crashed, so it'll be three days before that vin specific part is in...
BUT the SA did tell me that BMW NA is essentially being forced by the EPA to extend the warranty on all emissions related components of the diesles (both cars and savs) to 12 years, unlimited mileage. So, I'd give them a call and lean on them. If not, call the EPA and report it, then get the report and call them back. The diesel truck world, especially OTR trucks, has been whacked by the EPA several times now for faulty parts and been forced to warranty--sounds like that's extending to the passenger market (finally). They don't want a bunch of non-emission compliant vehicles running around. |
^^ Proflyer, can you point us to a source for the EPA information (i.e. Force to extend emissions warranty to 12 years)? I googled it for a while and came up empty??

Here is the response from the SA. Quite strange, it seems to say that if they replace a faulty part with a faulty part then your warranty is non-existent???? So much for having work done by a dealer....
It was initially replaced on 3/1/2012 and then again on 6/18/2013.The two (2) parts warranty started with the 1st replacement and expired as of 3/1/2014. Anyway, I sent an email to the lot that replaced it in 2013 to see if they step up for their work or not. |
if the "2013" dealer dismisses/ignores you' I'd send an email to BMWNA casually asking wtf?

Don't confuse that with what the SA told me at BMW a few days ago--that they're in 'talks' to extend the warranty on the diesels to 12 years. |
The shop that replaced the DEF active tank last (just under 2-yrs ago) is providing P&L warranty, will be ready Monday evening.

To share some personal experience.
I got same error about active DEF tank, and since I live in Toronto, took the tank myself to Xemodex in Mississauga. Picked up next day, took it to a mechanic to install. After picking the car now I have a error after seeing another CEL warning. 'no reducing agent build up pressure'. It seems tank is letting DEF out via the vent on top. So there will be another drop of tank and taking for warranty service. Such a hassle. |
