Any DIY for wheel bearings?
Going to to attempt to help a friend over the weekend replace his two front wheel bearings on his E70
|
You should study the bearing part diagram on realoem.com you may need to wd40 soak some nuts. Do one side at a time of course. Of course you need a diy must be one for e53 if not e70. I would not do anything I wasn't.confident doing with the right tools. You may need to study it this weekend and put it off.til next if you need to be better prepared.for the surgery. Realoem diagram seems to indicate it.is pretty easy so I think the biggest problem may be frozen nuts. Hate frozen nuts ;-)

My guess would be frozen axle splines. I am pretty sure the rest will be easy, but without a proper tool to push out the axle stubs you may be able to finish the job(or begin for that matter).

See part 5 here
RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog and axle here RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog Collar nut 3 and 7 I believe are same nut Get it off the axle spines and unbolt it. |
I think you need a special tool to push the axle splines out of the hub (maybe a hub puller)?
|
Yeah there are some tools out there that look like a hub puller, but the legs attach to the lug nuts and the stud is pushing the axle.
|
Its pretty much the same procedure as the E53. Lots of great stuff in the E53 section, a very mature section compared to the E70 which is still going through teething pains as people figure stuff out on their own

For those looking to do this themselves, you need a special tool to pull the axle flange through the wheel bearing. The cheapest place that I could find that had this is here

Yes the splines going into the bearing is a tight fit. People have struggled with these without the tool. Even pushing the flange out to remove the axle is a chore. You can try to use a puller or even a slide hammer, but its getting things back together that is the real PITA
