Thanks for the reply ninja, I just finish changing out the front differential fluid and only got .5 quart. What is that equal to in ML? Thanks, Sam

So front differential should take 600 Ml=.634 quart but if you overfill up to the filler neck then it will take 800 ml.

LOL US fluid ounce = 29.6 ml 600 ml ÷ 29.6 ml/fl oz = 20¼ fl oz

When i searched in the Rheingold software for my xdrive40d it says to fill it up to the fill neck and that's what I did. I don't know, maybe it's a different differential on the European version (although i highly doubt it) but that's what Rheingold said in my case to fill it up to the neck.

Actually the 600 ml thing is straight from Rheingold. You have an older version, may be?

ninja_zx11 07-29-2015 09:49 AM

That's right what price said.I took that document from the quite latest Rheingold version 3.47.10.So it's possible that 40d has a bigger differential that takes more than 600ml.But better to follow specific model in the Rheingold.

Hmm, not sure I have the same version. Do you mind taking the PDF out of yours for me please? Just curious : L L 4 4 6 4 3. Thanks a lot

Here you go and it calls for 600ML too.So it means same differential. But that's weird that you are getting different instructions.
Did you measure how much it came out?I measured and it came out around 550ml.So 600ml seems to be the right amount.

Also it looks like you have N57 engine.Would be curious to know how its different from M57.I read that it has variable geometry turbos.

thanks ninja, didn't get the chance to measure it, i think i'll take the risk and leave it like that since it says it could sip some oil out of the ventilation... no big deal
Yes it's the twin turbo one version of the N57. I read somewhere that it has the timing chains at the back of the engine instead of the front like the M57 does. Other than that i don't know how to compare it, it's my first bmw, and my first suv...so no idea how it compares to anything else. But I must say, my God this engine is a beast, i mean this thing overtakes and climbs steep hills while overtaking at 80-130km/h like it's a walk in the park, brutal but at the same time like floating and effortless. Worth every penny and every drop of diesel it drinks. I also have some intermittent issues with some boost flap that jams once in a while but after i gave it a healthy DPF regeneration it never came back (the part is 200$ anyway so i'm not worrying about it too much).

Yes just monitor the differential in case it overflows.Could you plz take the pdf with your version of rheingold?curious to see the difference in the instructions. Thanks
