Hmm so I probably should've readjusted the parking brake when I changed the rotors a couple weeks ago. Couple whacks and I was able to pull the rotor off no problem. I'm assuming I wouldn't have been able to do that if the parking brake was applied as the vehicle was off. Parking brake had a slight drag while spinning the new rotor which I thought was normal for a non-applied parking brake.

Also only time I've used the auto-hold was in line for gas at Costco. It's a weird feature and I just feel more confident with my foot on the brake.

There is a procedure in Ista for disengaging the parking brake to change the rear rotors.

I was EXTREMELY bored today and did a test.

I put the parking brake on and it works.

I cut the car off and we pushed the car back and forth enough to tell it was in park but not set with the parking brake.

So its not applying the parking brake when the motor is cut off all the time.

I have had the effect of waiting a second for the brake to disengage when cranking the car up to go somewhere.

So Im wondering if you have to leave the car sitting for a bit to get the auto parking brake engagement to happen? Because on my 2013 it isn't an "always" engaged when the car is cut off thing.

My 2007 4.8i didn't come with the Auto Hold feature so when my Parking Brake Switch broke, I replaced the switch with the upgraded one P/N 61319148508.

It was a direct swap. Auto Hold works perfectly and no coding was needed. Completely plug and play.

So I tried this with one I got on amazon. A lot said they had success but I got the yellow park symbol in the middle when I push auto hold. Did you ever figure it out ?

mine worked perfectly for about two weeks and then the yellow park symbol came on like yours. after some research it looks like my parking actuator is broken. I believe it was a $600-$800 part, but I really can't remember. Just knew it was too much money and time to fix something I can live without.

My parking brake is fine. i just get Auto hold Malfunction and when i scan with ISTA-D it shows "DSC - need to Code" . Tried that with iSTA-P and and icom but no luck.
i give up!

I don't think doing the retrofit caused the failure.

Auto Hold was working perfectly for a couple of days. Like I said, I didn't used the parking brake for several years. I think it's just a coincidence that I'm getting the Parking Brake Malfunction when I did. Probably the failure was caused by age, weather, dirt, etc.. who really knows.

From reading this forum and others, the braking brake actuator failure is a common problem rather or not you use the braking brake on a regular basis.

I have not actually removed the actuator to investigate the problem any further.

If your parking brake is functioning well now, I think you can go ahead and buy the new switch and do the retrofit. Auto Hold is a great feature and worked well. It did help take some stress off my leg.

I just don't want to spend the time and money ($800) to fix the actuator.

Good luck

After I did the retrofit, the car started making noise after around 1 month when engaging the brake, and the actuator went out after 2 months (never used the HOLD button, did the retrofit because I did not like blank buttons). Not sure if they are related, as the HOLD switch is for cars after 10/2007, and mines is 03/2007.

Also, after manually releasing the parking brake, the HOLD button does not work anymore. This shows that the HOLD button probably uses the parking brake.

I will be replacing my unit with an Uro one. Hopefully that holds up. It also has a warranty. I will keep using the switch, but if the actuator breaks again, I will replace it with one without the HOLD button.

Did you need to do coding after fixing your actuator?

Unrelated. Auto hold does not use the parking brake, although a broken parking brake does disable auto hold. I was under the same impression initially, which it is slightly confounding given it uses the same button. Your parking brake module just failed. Flukey timing. I got mine rebuilt for $150 or so and it’s worked fine for 5 years. Auto hold system is separate. I do believe you need coding if you don’t reuse the same parking actuator but not 100% sure.

I bought a URO part for replacement. Did you use Ebay parts for yours? If yours lasted 5 years, no problem, maybe I'll do that too. Did you replace the rubber gasket?

absentmathis 07-30-2023 06:35 PM

I mailed mine off for refurbishment. I don’t recall replacing any gaskets. When I say five years it’s five years and counting so I wouldn’t hesitate to go that route again. Either way good luck with your repair.
