I got the same letter a week ago, from what I read online they will start doing repairs in the summer.

IMO, the 3.0 engine is a bit small for a 5,000+ lb. vehicle. It's nice to step on the gas and go with the 4.8.

They are surprisingly close:
X3 3.5i 4230lbs unladen 302 hp and 395 lb-ft. 14.0:1 weight to hp, 14.3:1 weight to tq

X5 4.8 (e70) approx 5,000lbs unladen 353 hp and 358 lb-ft. 14.1:1 weight to hp, 14.0:1 weight to tq.

Gearing, etc are different, I didn't look up the 0-60 times.

I can honestly say I would not buy another X5. I have had so many problems with my 2011. Even though it is a CPO certified BMW up to 7 yrs 100k miles, I'm dropping it off again, every other month for something, the proof is in the pudding. My service writer printed all my repairs and it was a book! Every service performed, following the factory maintenance schedule was from the dealership, except for the last set of tires, as they would not install non run flats. Fun to drive is awesome but reliability is horrible. I have the N55 motor, just hit 70k miles. It was in the shop almost 45 days last year. One thing I can say is that I got a chance to drive several different BMW models as loaners.

I have a really hard time believing the V8 adds 700-800 lbs. All options held equal, the engine and transmission maybe weigh an extra 250lbs combined, and that's pushing it. I think you found some bad data, or you are comparing a fully-optioned 4.8 vs a base model 3.5

Data was from Wiki and BMWUSA. Could be some US vs ROW differences in the data, too. Best I could find in a quick look.

The recall is for the X5 too. I've just had a letter in the post and I have a 2012 E70.
