On and off CEL code P0101 & P0112
 

Hi guys been off the grid for a bit.

4days ago, got the dreaded engine malfunction reduced power message on the I drive and cel light. Went in on Thursday OBD scanned gave me the two above codes. Two hours later, the CEL was gone and all system control check is OK. The next day, again, no light and control check ok. After about 40 miles of driving about. Both the cel and malfunction came and remained on..
No notice of any difference in driving or throttle reduction. As seems and feel normal.
Would this on and off symptom be dirty sensor to the MAF? Or a soon to be on its way out MAF. More importantly, is it safe to drive for couple days till I get a rental a drop off for repairs?
2011 35d 40,200 miles. Latest repair was to urea tank 2 months ago at dealer.

Do not have a Diesel, but a 4.8l E70.

I was kind of fighting an intermittent P0597 (thermostat heater control circuit open) that seemed to be somewhat temperature dependent.

After some investigation I finally determined the female terminals in the connector seemed spread and loose. So I just took a pick and gently and slightly closed the female terminal ends and when I plugged the connector back into the thermostat I could immediately tell that the connector was far more snug than before.

I have driving about 1500 miles and have been in temps as low as 30F and as high as 65F so far and the problem has not returned.

So I would attempt to check the female terminals in the MAF connector, the other problem I have been seeing on some models is the MAF wiring breaking right at the terminal crimp end inside the connector or back at the wiring box where the pigtail connects.

But I would try pinching the female connectors first. Quick, easy and cheap test.

Thanks fjoj for your input. I took everything out and cleaned it with CRC...no luck ..all the connectors looks fine and wiring. guess time to bring it in. Thanks again.

One of the codes is a MAF, the other is the intake air temp sensor. The intake air temp sensor is actually 0 if I am recalling correctly- part of the MAF.

I suspect a maf or wiring to same.

Apparently there's a new SIB (SI B13 06 16) out there for the M57 that reads something like this: "Replace the hot film mass airflow sensor (HFM) because internal tolerances do not meet specification. Can cause a SES light."

I haven't seen it so I'm not sure if the codes would be the same you are experiencing. Like ard said the air intake temperature sensor is part of the MAF assembly (there's also a charged air temperature sensor in diesel engine which is different and placed on the charge air tube right before the throttle/EGR).

In any case, call your local dealer, reference the SIB I gave you, see if it applies to your car.

The SA said that SIB # doesn't refer to the 35d. He didn't go into detail as to which vehicles it covers but if it was not applicable to my 35d.
it would've shown up on system. According to him, if it was.
Fault code currently present 4BC2
The SES light was caused by the MAF.
On the print out, it does show the HOt film air mass 13-62-8-509-725

EDIT: I actually overstated: perhaps it does not apply to your specific MY, but the SIB mentioned definitely applies to the 35d.

I have the same exact thing happening on 2011 x5 diesel with 41000K on the odometer. @jc1surf - how did the service tech resolve the issue?

While my 35d was in getting the Air Bags replaced, I tried to get the Engine Compartment Partition replaced by quoting a SIB. The SA (my usual SA was out sick) said that SIB only pertained to vehicles still under warranty.

Your 35d appears to be a CPO. Maybe that is why the MAF SIB was covered?
