Given the entire supply chain is geared to fulfill primarily the needs for new autos, there's not massive excess capacity. And this Takata issue spans numerous manufacturers and loads of model lines. But there's NO excuse for screwing around with you.

As far as loaners to do a recall job, I guess that's up to availability and policies at the dealership. I hardly ever use my dealership for repairs, sometimes for parts, yet I had no problem getting a loaner for both airbag recalls I've had so far. One tip on that; let them know you'll want a loaner when you schedule the appointment so they can book you on a day a loaner is available; it may not be the soonest day they can do the service.

The way they explained it was that they had to order from their distribution center, not Takata and the DC's supposedly have them in stock. Sorry, but I only believe about 1% of what is said by the dealership.

Their comment on loaners was a simple "NO as a matter of policy, we do not provide a loaner for the airbag replacement." They said the job was too quick for them to even consider a loaner. Even though the letter stated a loaner would be provided at no cost.

I probably wouldn't be as angered if they weren't so busy acting like they are doing me a favor and I was really disturbing them by having the recall. This dealership (part of the Hendrick's Automotive group) is well known for this type of treatment to customers and as Q mentioned, gouged people when the goodwill cluster replacement was happening a few years ago.

For a 1 hour job they won't give a loaner. Despite that, I waited almost 3 hours at the dealer. Miscommunication, as I saw my car completed and waiting outside after one hour. Service rep said I had to wait, mechanics were busy... But the truck stayed there, I even checked my dash cam.

Since I didn't trust whether they did it, I popped it out to check the airbag date, March 2017, so they did do it and the service Rep just got mixed up as the shop didn't report it completed. Blah, that's why I'd rather do my own work...

You're correct, the driver's side airbag is book time of 1 hour, but can be done in 15 - 20 minutes, including disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. Then on to reset the date/time. LOL

But passenger airbag takes a bit longer than the one on the steering wheel since they have to remove the upper dash cover. That is book time of 7+ hours. Couple that with the driver's side airbag and it's an all day affair! This is the kind of crap this $tealership is known for!

I too would prefer they just send me the parts, I'll do it all myself and return the old parts to them. LOL

I got a loaner no problem for both times I had driver's side airbags replaced; (two cars). I guess I should publically say thanks to Westchester BMW. It really is a first class dealership; can't say that I can afford to be a great customer, except for the parts counter, (they do give a BMW CCA discount). The parts guys are very nice and extremely helpful. They seem to get a kick out of a customer coming in to get parts to do their own maintenance, especially considering I have a fleet of older cars. I do most of my own repairs, and its been 34 years since I bought a new BMW.

I think k I'll have the check my front suspension too so I know what to plan on my diy. Only $110 for the diag. Rotate and balance only $89.

I can confirm this at the same Charlotte Hendrick BMW dealer. I just waited until they had the driveshaft recall part in stock to schedule my driver Airbag at the same time - but they still had to order the airbag from the Distribution center, which took a couple weeks for them to get it.
Then I had them do both in one visit. They threw a new transfer case in too apparently, cuz I'm a good customer! :stickpoke

BTW, Sorry for San Francisco, but the Hendrick dealer out here has a solid rep. Oh and I got a loaner X1, but they had my car for a week...
[Impressions on the X1 were, well, it's no X5! Not terrible but more of a price-point car, very Honda-ish. Did not care for the "springy" feeling turbo-4, or the stop/start - which thankfully you can switch off.]

They give loaners here in Atlanta as well for this recall. I had my driver side done and have an appointment on the 8th for the passenger side. They are providing a loaner since the process involves removing the whole dash! I do not understand how dealers pick and choose the level of service they provide.

I got 5 notices in the mail yesterday for our vehicles about Takata filing for Bankruptcy and that we need to get our vehicles in ASAP.

I just got my drivers side replaced yesterday at Seattle BMW. They do not have the passenger side in stock at the moment, and it's likely to be around Christmas before they do.

I had an X4 for a loaner. The car felt nice inside, but I did not like the feedless steering and soft brakes at all.

lordshin808 11-02-2017 10:22 AM

i'm scheduled to come in Nov 20 for both drivers and passenger side. apparently the passenger side will take a whole day or more.

BMW West Houston do not offer loaners on recalls. sucks!
